The man charged with killing officer Micheal, 39-year-old Ian McCarthy, has managed to elude police for more than a day, but officers say they are working dozens of leads in the search for the suspected police killer.
Flags are lowered to half-staff Tuesday at the Henry County Sheriff's Office and underneath, a memorial grows in honor of officer Gary Michael who was shot and killed as he exited his patrol vehicle late Sunday night. Investigators believe McCarthy, 39, jumped from his vehicle and shot the 37-year-old Michael, before driving a short distance, crashing his vehicle and fleeing on foot. McCarthy reportedly then took off, crashed his vehicle and ran on foot.
Michael was able to fire back, but on Monday it was unclear whether he struck McCarthy.
Michael was rushed to a local hospital, where he passed away from his injuries.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of fallen Clinton, Missouri Police Officer Gary Michael", the Secret Service tweeted out.
Michael is the first officer to die in the line of duty for the department, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.
A manhunt was underway for the McCarthy. "We're doing everything we can to find him".

"Heavy firing and shelling was going on in the area as Indian troops were retaliating with heavy weapons on Pakistani posts", they said.
"He's my hero. He's my big brother", Chris Michael said.
"That compounds the problem, when someone is able to not have any ties to a certain area, that makes the investigation more hard", Lowe said. "After returning home and finding his feet, not to mention the love of his life, he achieved his dream of becoming a police officer", she wrote in the post. "Every traffic stop yields its own issues sometimes. We don't know the individuals in the vehicle". He was there protecting and serving and that's what we're called to do. Authorities warned he should be considered armed and risky. "We have to make sure our officers are safe, while also making sure no one else is hurt".
McCarthy had previously been charged with unlawful possession of firearm in July 2015, a felony, and operating a vehicle without a valid license in 2013.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol, Henry County Sheriff's Office and Clinton Police Department are searching for McCarthy.
"He needs to be apprehended before he harms anyone else", Lowe said.
About 30 law enforcement agencies in counties surrounding Clinton are augmenting officers from Clinton, Henry County and the patrol.
