A flawless restart allowed Vettel to draw right up toward Hamilton's diffuser on the run down to Eau Rouge, only for the German to get too close and have to ease off, costing him straight line speed that may have allowed him to pass at the end of the Kemmel Straight. "It is an incredible feat he achieved and I am very proud to be up there with him", Hamilton spoke of his record-equalling pole.
Hamilton's fifth win this season was his 58th overall, having equaled Michael Schumacher's pole position record of 68 in Saturday's qualifying.
"I am interested to hear what he (Vettel) has to say", Hamilton, sitting alongside his rival, said after Vettel was quizzed about Lauda's comments.
On the 25th anniversary of Michael Schumacher's first Grand Prix win, Hamilton set about emulating the racing legend in style.
Speaking after qualifying, when asked about his new deal, Vettel said: "I am very happy to extend my contract with Ferrari".
Hamilton responded by saying that it was a very special moment for him in his Formula 1 career.
Lewis Hamilton has laughed off a suggestion that Formula One title rival Sebastian Vettel might become his Mercedes team-mate after the Ferrari driver indicated an announcement about his future was not imminent.
He said: "I can't believe it".
2nd Test of England vs West Indies
After losing the first of three tests by an innings and 209 runs, West Indies responded by bowling England out for 258 on Friday. Woakes, who had come into the team at the expense of Toby Roland-Jones, is a fine bowler but looked short of a gallop today.

Schumacher Jnr will drive a Benetton B194, the vehicle in which his dad won six of the first seven races before, controversially, beating Damon Hill to the championship in Adelaide.
"I think he was a little bit too close on the run out of Turn 1, so I think he had to lift off as he would have otherwise come by potentially before Eau Rouge which perhaps was a good thing for me because he lost a little bit of performance".
"I don't believe any of the bosses or any of the individuals within the team is unhappy with what is now in place, so I find it hard to believe they will change that". Just honoured to be up there with him now in the polls.
"I think the exchange and communication is important, and Niki is our ambassador in that sense, and this might have happened around then".
Vettel, who had struggled through the build-up sessions, admitted: "I really needed that final lap".
The Mercedes-GP driver twice had to rebuff passing moves from Vettel as the Ferrari man was never more than three seconds behind the Briton throughout the 44-lap race at Spa-Francorchamps. "I'm in no hurry, I know that I am in a good position", he said.
