Six members of a Houston family are presumed dead after the vehicle they were riding in was submerged in Hurricane Harvey's floodwaters on Sunday.
She said it was a tight-knit family, with relatives living within a few blocks of each other.
"Sammy told me he panicked and he got scared".
A man between the ages of 60 and 70 reportedly drowned around 11:30 p.m. Monday night.
"Were you close to your nieces and nephews?" The children's great-uncle, who was driving, was able to escape before the water overtook the van.
The four children and their great-grandparents died Sunday afternoon when Samuel Saldivar, the driver of the van, attempted to pick them up amid the flooding, his sister-in-law Virginia Saldivar told the Associated Press. He told the trapped children to escape from the van's back door, but they were not able to, according to KHOU.
Witnesses told the station the van had crossed a bridge in northeast Houston when it was hit with major flooding, which caused the van to be swept away. On left, Manuel Saldivar, 84, and wife Belia Saldivar, 81.

The nation's fourth-largest city was still largely paralyzed by one of the largest downpours in US history. Harvey made landfall in Texas on Friday night as a Category 4 hurricane, but it has since been downgraded to a tropical storm as it weakens while inland. With almost 2 feet of rain still expected, authorities anxious whether the worst was yet to come.
Harvey has been blamed for at least two confirmed deaths.
