The National Hurricane Center said in its 11 a.m. forecast Wednesday that a tropical depression in southwestern Caribbean is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Nate later today. Central update Thursday, Nate had winds of 40 miles per hour off the coast of Nicaragua and was moving northwest at 9 miles per hour.
Depression 16 was expected to continue on its northwest trajectory, nearing the coast of Nicaragua and Honduras by Thursday.
Dennis Feltgen, spokesman for the National Hurricane Center, noted that the storm's forecast is a "low-confidence prediction".
Tropical Depression 16 has formed in the Caribbean and is expected to become Tropical Storm Nate by Wednesday evening.
