Bennett's release comes hours after Packers coach Mike McCarthy ruled him out for this week because of a shoulder injury.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Packers could argue that, given the undisclosed pre-existing injury, Bennett's entire contract is void, which could allow the team to get back some or all of the $8 million they've already paid Bennett.
However, it's still an unusual situation in Green Bay, and it'll be interesting to see how things play out over the next couple of months.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 gameplay details, expansion pass, day-one updates, more announced
Available as a free update, the quest gives players the chance to unlock a Xenoblade costume for Link. The collector's edition and special Nintendo pro controller will also release on launch day.
The Packers are expected to use fellow tight ends Lance Kendricks and Richard Rodgers while Bennett remains sidelined after the two saw their workload increase in Monday's game. By the afternoon, Bennett had been cut by the Packers. Bennett had base salaries of $900,000 this season, $3.6 million (plus a $2 million roster bonus) in 2018 and $5.65 million in 2019.
Unfortunately for the franchise, things didn't work out that way with Bennett's future in the National Football League uncertain, to say the least following his release.
"The 6'6" TE struggled to adjust to the offensive scheme in Green Bay, as in seven games he only recorded 24 receptions for 233 yards and no touchdowns, and developed an issue with drops that he never seemed to recover from. The storied franchise has lost three straight games and now have made a decision to part ways with tight end Martellus Bennett. "If Marty's not, the other guys are ready to go".
