"The point of doing this is to just give a hardcore smack down to gasoline cars", Musk told the crowd gathered at Tesla's design studio near Los Angeles, touting the Roadster's 1.9-second 0-60 miles per hour time and 620 miles of range.
Tesla is aiming for a 2020 production for the new Roadster. Musk boasted that the Semi will be able to go 500 miles at full speed before needing to stop to recharge the battery. Using four separate electric motors, the Semi will go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in five seconds, compared with 15 seconds in a diesel cab, Musk said.
He also said it will cost less than a diesel truck considering fuel savings, lower maintenance and other factors.

But Chief Executive Elon Musk did not offer details about how Tesla would fund these projects, leaving Wall Street analysts sceptical about the company's ability to ramp up production as it spends money at a quick clip.
Tesla's target market for the Semi is both fleet operators and independent owner operators. And if three streamlined Semis are platooned as a close-following convoy, the cost per mile would go down to 85 cents, Musk said. These are the words used by Tesla's head honcho, who also mentioned the workhorse is based on the semi and that it can be legally driven with a regular driver's license, admitting it's "kind of wrong". Production for the new Roadster sports vehicle, a likely Ferrari rival, will start in 2020. Though the vehicle is clearly priced in supercar territory, it's far cheaper than numerous supercars it outperforms. Inside the truck's cabin - tall enough for a driver to stand upright - there are two large touchscreen interfaces.
David and Tom just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy right now. and Tesla wasn't one of them!
But most of that growth is expected to be for smaller, medium-duty haulers like garbage trucks or delivery vans.
