Four more Assembly constituencies in three States - Uttar Pradesh (Sikandra constituency), Arunachal Pradesh (Pakke-Kasang and Likbali) and West Bengal (Sabang) would also be held on the same day.
Chennai: The AIADMK legislative committee meeting tomorrow in which their candidate for RK Nagar by-poll (21 December) is expected to be announced.
Friday's announcement by the Election Commission that the Dr Radhakrishna Nagar by-poll will be held on December 21 was met with a sense of relief and a hope.
RK Nagar Assembly constituency fell vacant following the demise of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa past year. Last date for filing nominations will be December 4. The Election Commission had originally made a decision to hold the by-election to the constituency on April 12 but cancelled it in the wake of allegations of "cash-for-votes". These two leaders had been in opposing splinter groups of the party the last time the by-election had been announced.
The Income Tax Department had said that the V K Sasikala camp, which was fighting in RK Nagar in the bypoll under the name AIADMK (Amma), had paid close to Rs 90 crore to voters to buy support for its candidate T T V Dinakaran.
Army soldier on vacation killed in Shopian
Army spokesman said that Sepoy Irfan Ahmad Dar son of Gh Mohd Dar, of village Senzen, Shopian district was a serving soldier. The body of the official was recovered from an orchard area in Watmullah Keegam area of Shopian, a police official said.
Sources said the party had chose to contest this election and the party's top brass in Delhi would be announcing the candidate within a few days.
The Congress too declared that it would support the DMK candidate.
The united AIADMK - the Palaniswami-Panneerselvam combine, which recently won the right to use the two leaves symbol - will field Madhusudhanan.
Last time, BJP had fielded music director Gangai Amaran as its candidate.
Dinakaran had earlier said he would contest in the by-election whenever it is held.
