HBO has confirmed that the show will return in 2019 for a six-episode final season, but the cable broadcaster has not specified the exact date or month.
The long gap until the final season would give author George R.R. Martin the chance to finish one or two new "Game of Thrones" books that he said in July he was working on.
Show creators David Benioff and DB Weiss told Entertainment Weekly in 2016 that they wanted to make the series finale as spectacular as possible.
Game of Thrones Season 7 aired in summer of 2017 and previous seasons had usually run in the spring.

The characters include "Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), Jon Snow (Kit Harington), Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), Eddard Stark (Sean Bean), Olenna Tyrell (Diana Rigg), and Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance)", Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey).
The television series has already advanced beyond the events of George RR Martin's five published novels in his A Song of Ice and Fire series.
Benioff and Weiss will also direct the final season, HBO said.
The budget for the final episodes of the hit series is much bigger than the standard for expensive TV episodes, with each episode costing $15 million apiece. Leaving fans with only seven episodes as opposed to its typical 10 episode season. They will collaborate on the six episodes of the series' eighth and last season.
