With January being National Blood Donor Month, the American Red Cross hopes blood and platelet donors of all blood types make an appointment to help the shortage.
Of course, in the Norfolk and Coastal areas of Virginia, blood drives scheduled for last week had to be cancelled due to the storm, further hampering the donations there.
The Red Cross is desperate to find 10 whole blood donors and five plasma donors who can give blood at the Ipswich donor centre as soon as possible.
"Even temporary disruptions to blood and platelet donations can diminish the availability for hospital patients", said Christy Peters, external communications manager of the local Red Cross Blood Services Region.
Eligible individuals are urged to schedule a blood or platelet donation today by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767).
South Texas 'critically low' on blood donations
"We know the weather conditions can discourage people from going out and cause them to cancel appointments, but we really need people to keep those appointments", said Kristen Lane, marketing lead for Central Blood Bank. Blood donors should bring photo ID.
The need is especially critical on the East Coast which has been socked by frigid temperatures.
