Candice Diaz, the girl's mother, and her boyfriend Brad Fields were arrested Tuesday in Lake Park, Georgia off I-75 near the state line of Florida.
Police launched a manhunt for Diaz and Fields, who have been charged with felony murder, second-degree murder, first-degree child abuse and torture, police said. Police say they are believed to be driving a black 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier with MI plates DTR1854.
Two days later, the Washtenaw County Medical Examiner ruled the child's death as a homicide with evidence of multiple traumatic injuries and signs of Battered Child Syndrome.
Police responded to a 911 call around 10:45 a.m. on January 1 for an unresponsive 4-year-old girl.
Family members were administering CPR when officers arrived, police said.
The girl, identified as Gabby Barrett by Detroit Fox affiliate WJBK, was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, where she was pronounced dead. Officers found weapons, drug paraphernalia, garbage, and dog urine and feces in their residence, according to police reports from the time.
Trump declares he's deporting 200000 Salvadoran immigrants from US
Trump said in September that he was ending Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, but gave Congress until March to act. In its latest designation, the United States granted TPS to Salvadorans in 2001 after two earthquakes hit the country that year.
Diaz told cops Fields punched her and smashed her phone before turning the gun on himself and blowing a whole in his leg, shouting "see if you can outrun these bullets", according to the report.
WDIV reported that the girl's January 1 death was not the first time police have been called to the couple's mobile home.
Brad Fields, 28, faces murder, child abuse and torture charges in the death of Gabrielle Barrett on January 1, 2018.
Police were sent to the home May 20, 2016, on a report of a domestic assault. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office later issued a warrant for the arrest of Diaz and Fields, according to police.
