He wanted Gruden to be his first coaching hire in 2012.
Gruden was introduced Tuesday in front of a large crowd that included almost 50 former Raiders and nine Pro Football Hall of Famers as the coach Davis believes can carry Derek Carr and the Raiders back to the top.
Davis said the pending move to Las Vegas in 2020 had nothing to do with hiring Gruden. I've been fired. I've missed the game terribly. "I want you", Gruden told Carr on the ESPN show.
The Raiders lured Jon Gruden out of the broadcast booth to become their head coach for a second time with a 10-year, $100 million that is as stupid as it sounds.
"Brady fumbled that ball." said Gruden to his former player Charles Woodson.
17 years later he is back with the Raiders.
After being asked about "20 years away" from coaching, Gruden politely pointed out, "I'm not that old", and obviously, "I haven't won a game since 2008". "I hope these players are ready because they're going to get Chucky".
Dropbox has confidentially filed to go public
One big question that hangs over a potential IPO is what sort of valuation Dropbox would command as a public company. Representatives for the company, along with the same of JPMorgan and Goldman declined to comment on this matter.
The massive screen at the front of the room flashed TV clips of news outlets reporting Gruden's potential interest in the Raiders last week, accompanied by a dramatic narration. Answering a prior question about the possibility of anthem protests by some of the Raiders players contributing to the team's 6-10 record this past season, Gruden said, "I'm going to look into all that".
Gruden last coached in the National Football League in 2008, leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to back-to-back 9-7 records in his final two years with the team. "That's going to be wonderful", Brown said, laughing. "All I know is that this year I'm going to be coaching in Oakland, and next year I'm going to be coaching in Oakland". Long, a rookie in 1981, spent only one season in Oakland before the team moved south. "He hasn't coached in nine years, and that's quite awhile for a coach". "Jon is, as you have to be, myopic in (his) thought process that, 'I'm in the here-and-now'". Sure, life with Gruden will be exceptionally different than playing for a player's coach like Jack Del Rio, but Carr is humble and secure enough in his abilities to take hard coaching. There were points that they looked like juggernauts and times where they just looked flat, and the end result after an opening-round playoff loss is going to see Alex Smith either benched or traded. "We lost going to the Super Bowl in 2002 and weren't able to execute and bring the Lombardi Trophy home, but who knows". Was being on the road every week a factor? "With that said, I have a lot to prove, and I know that". Gruden mentioned being responsible for what's said and compared a public post to spoken words on the mic.
Davis got the coach he's yearned for the past six years, since assuming control after the death of his father, Al Davis.
A reporter asked directly about running back Marshawn Lynch, and Gruden revealed he never held a conversation with the 31-year old back.
Davis said. "And by far to get Jon Gruden was the toughest".
Gruden officially announced his selections for the team's coordinator positions, tapping Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach Greg Olson as his offensive coordinator and installing Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Paul Guenther and Dallas Cowboys special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia in those same roles in Oakland.
