Trump, who has at times exchanged taunts and threats with Kim, said in early January after the first intra-Korean talks in over two years that the United States was willing to speak to North Korea "under the right circumstances", although it was far from clear whether this would pay dividends.
The venue, Kwandong Hockey Center in sub-host city Gangneung, was packed with six-thousand spectators, including South Korean President Moon Jae-in and a high-ranking North Korean delegation, including the regime's nominal head of state Kim Yong-nam.
Kim Yo Jong cuts a contrasting figure to her brother in North Korea's formal and tightly controlled state propaganda.
The United States has repeatedly pressed China, North Korea's most significant trading partner and main ally, to do more to rein in Pyongyang's nuclear and missile ambitions.

US Vice President Mike Pence also attended the Games opening ceremony but had no contact with the North Korean delegation.

And while significant, the two Koreas have marched under a unified flag at previous Olympics.
Officials in Tokyo suspect North Korea is trying to chip away at the united front of the United States and its East Asian allies as worldwide sanctions bite the hermit country.
But instead of broadcasting the morning event live, North Korean television aired an edited version later in the day, giving it a somewhat lower profile than expected. Kim was leading a high-level delegation that also included the younger sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
