In the online cover story of the issue, which is on newsstands now, Herrington crossed paths with the issue's first Black model in Tyran Banks in a surprise visit that was captured on video. While this year's annual special edition features no shortage of handsome women with mainstream media-friendly body proportions and barely-there swimsuits, the magazine is also changing things up.
So this surprise for 2018's Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition cover model is pretty wonderful. But the honor had special meaning for Herrington.
As you may recall, Tyra Banks was the first woman of color to grace the cover as she posed alongside Valeria Mazza in 1996. The model quipped, "I noticed that when I was 15".
SI debuted the cover earlier on Tuesday (Feb. 13).
The 23-year-old former United States Olympic star has been speaking out publicly over the last month or so, beginning with her chilling testimony at the hearing of sexual abuser Team USA doctor Larry Nassar.

He further added that: "LoUs had not been converted into funded transaction so far, so it is a contingent liability". The ED has enllarged its probe to look into the charge of fraud of Rs 11,400 crore, agency officials said.
Sailor was so proud to be a part of SI again that she took to Instagram to dish on being included in the iconic magazine again. She made an impression during that shoot, and it directly led to her landing this year's cover. "I was balling. I worked so hard for this", she said this morning. All those things separately don't guarantee a cover, though.
There's a lot of buzz going around ahead of Sports Illustrated releasing its upcoming 2018 Swimsuit Issue. All the good things about her seemed to be magnified.
While the photo of Culpo on the floor strategically hides anything overly NSFW, the second photo is full on shot of her bare backside. Right now she's ranked 113th in the world, kicking off her 2018 season with a 3-3 record through three tournaments including a first-round victory at the Australian Open.
Raisman said she was pleased to be appearing in the Swimsuit Issue two years in a row.
