On Saturday, Modi who greeted the gathering in Tamil listed out the central government schemes meant for women after launching the Amma scooter scheme.
Following Twitter's laughter outburst over the life-size statue of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa erected in Chennai, AIADMK MLA and Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar promised that changes would be made to the statue, which according to the public bears no resemblance to her.
Modi symbolically handed over the keys and registration certificates of two wheelers to five women on the occasion, reports PTI. He launched the Amma Two Wheeler Scheme, one of Jayalalithaa's dream projects to empower the poor.
"When we empower women in a family, we empower the entire household". When we give them education, it empowers the entire family.

I am told that on Amma's 70th birthday, 70 lakh plants will be planted across Tamil Nadu. The Prime Minister said his government had given Rs 1.8 lakh crore to Tamil Nadu under the 14th Finance Commission.

Stating that Amma had implemented several schemes for the safety and well being of women, right from their birth to old age, Panneerselvam said the scooter scheme too envisioned by the late leader, was for people's welfare and development. "Be it financial inclusion, easy availability of credit for farmers and small business, healthcare or sanitation, this is the basic mantra, with which the NDA Government at the Centre is working", he said. Modi was flown to the Indian Navy's base, INS Adyar, from where he took a minutes-long drive to the venue of the launch.
Last month, the state government increased the subsidy component under the scheme from Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000.
