The next step, you would imagine, is to allow users to remotely unlock the front door with Alexa letting Amazon delivery people (for example) drop by even when you're not home. "We look forward to being a part of the Amazon team as we work toward our vision for safer neighborhoods", a Ring spokesperson said in a statement.
As recently as past year, Ring had an estimated 97% share of U.S. video doorbell sales, according to Forbes. The retail giant had invested in the startup previously through its Alexa Fund, created to help companies build out skills and products for its smart assistant.
It's expected that Amazon will treat this acquisition in the same manner as some of its other purchases, adding functionality to its own devices (and vice versa) as possible, but otherwise allowing Ring to continue operations as they have, only now under the Amazon umbrella.
Amazon has bought security company Ring that's mostly known for its smart doorbells.
Nawaz Sharif becomes lifetime leader of PML-N
According to the party's rules, the PML-N's CWC is supposed to elect an acting party head within a week of its chief's removal. His elder brother and ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was made the ruling party's top leader, " Quaid " for lifetime.
Amazon was working on a competing smart lock with camera prior to the deal, according to a separate person familiar with the matter. At the time of that announcement, Amazon unveiled a Cloud Cam product that essentially is an indoor security camera.
Interestingly, Ring CEO and chief inventor James Siminoff brought the product, then called Doorbot, onto the show Shark Tank in 2013, failing to make a deal.
Ring is just the latest smart home acquisition for Amazon.
The California-based startup is a logical acquisition for Amazon, given its recent dive into the smart home security sphere. The company likely plans to integrate the new technologies into its tremendously popular home technology hub aka the Echo smart speaker.
With investments in so many industries - retail, grocery, hardware, AI - it's not a stretch to imagine a future where someone can tell Alexa to buy groceries, a delivery worker can pick up the food from an Amazon-owned Whole Foods, and a customer can monitor doorstep delivery via Ring. Its Alexa voice-activated digital assistant, meanwhile, has emerged as one of the leading software tools linking together internet connected devices, from light bulbs to refrigerators, built by other companies. "It was disgusting. I could not believe that we had done all of that work and were walking away with nothing", Siminoff wrote on his blog in 2015.
