Playa del Carmen is considered a security threat to USA citizens, with US officials issuing a travel alert after undetonated explosive devices were found on a ferry that operates between the Mexican resort town and Cozumel a week after a ferry explosion in late February.

The State Department official said Wednesday's security alert for Playa del Carmen is different from a travel advisory and is meant to inform USA citizens "of specific safety and security concerns in a country, such as demonstrations, crime trends, and weather events".
The U.S. Consular Agency in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo was closed until further notice. It said the US consular agency there "will be closed until further notice".
All tourism and economic activities in Playa del Carmen continue in a normal manner and hotel occupancy at the resort city was at 80 percent, said the statement. One week later, at least one explosive device was found on another ferry.
