According to the Nebraska senator Ben Sasse, a critic of the administration's trade policy, Trump said "multiple times" that he was deputizing Lighthizer and Kudlow to review re-entry into TPP.
Trump railed against the original TPP and other multilateral trade deals throughout the 2016 campaign, arguing that poorly negotiated trade agreements destroyed United States jobs.
"We have officially terminated TPP", declared Mr. Trump at the order signing.
A week after escalating trade tensions with his threat to impose tariffs on an additional $100 billion in Chinese products, Trump said Thursday the two countries ultimately may end up levying no new tariffs on each other.

He added, "It is good news that today the President directed Larry Kudlow and Ambassador Lighthizer to negotiate USA entry into TPP". "He's going to get rid of a lot of taxes and tariffs", Trump said of Xi.
