China's foreign ministry claims 4 North Koreans and also 32 citizens are murdered in a traffic incident in northkorea that is southern.
About 80 percent of all North Korea's foreign tourists are Chinese, it says.
The ministry provided few details but China's state broadcaster CGTN earlier tweeted that more than 30 people died when a tour bus fell from a bridge in North Korea. The tweet was then deleted.
Footage on Chinese state broadcaster CCTV showed the wreckage of a bus from the dark with rain falling. Under North Korean rules, all visitors should be accompanied by minders.
North Korea is a popular, if offbeat, tourist destination for Chinese, especially those from the country's northeast.
China, known as North Korea's main economic lifeline, used to account for almost 90 percent of the neighboring country's external trade.
The Chinese health ministry said it was sending a team of doctors as well as medical equipment and supplies to North Korea to treat survivors.
But bilateral ties had worsened as Pyongyang continued to develop ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons in defiance of global warnings, which prompted China to bolster economic sanction against North Korea.

His adoption was part of the outcome of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) which ended in London on Friday. In 2017, 44 percent of British exports went to the European Union and just 9 percent to Commonwealth countries.
The crash, which also killed four North Koreans, happened in North Hwanghae province last night.
More recently, the area hosted a manufacturing complex operated with South Korea.

But the route from Pyongyang to Kaesong, where the accident reportedly happened, is one of the best in the country.
North Korean roads are often bumpy and poorly maintained.
Tank traps have been installed along it in many locations towards the frontier - sets of high concrete columns on either side of the road that can easily be blown up to create an obstruction for invading armour. The ministry says it immediately initiated an "emergency mechanism" and has been "sparing no effort" in attending to the situation.
