The feature will allow Instagram's 200 million users to video chat one on one or with multiple people. Explore is keeping the custom-tailored content for each user, but Instagram is also looking to divvy up the feed into topic channels. Users don't have to connect their Instagram account to a third-party app, either, if they want to share to their Stories. First and foremost is video calling, which is now in a testing phase and will roll out globally in the coming months. That was a conscious choice from the company's founders, who wanted to make sure that everything posted on the app was a reflection of what a user created, not what they curated from others.
When it comes to Instagram, there's a bit more substance in the announcements. You can also minimize the video and continue the chat while doing other things on Instagram. That's because the smartphone's ability to display augmented realities has made it a ideal testbed for Facebook to build up its technology ahead of the computing platform it believes will make the idea worthwhile: AR headsets.
The Explore page will feature buttons at the top of the page that are labeled by interest, which users can swipe through to view more tabs. At launch, translations from English to Spanish (and vice-versa) will be available in Marketplace conversations taking place in the US.
The new effects will roll out to all users over time.
