The Vegas Golden Knights have made plenty of history so far this season, making the playoffs in their inaugural year, getting their first playoff win in their first game, becoming the first NHL, MLB or National Basketball Association expansion team to sweep a series in their first year, and now, advancing to the Western Conference finals thanks to a 3-0 win in a road Game Six against the San Jose Sharks Sunday night.
The Vegas Golden Knights are an opportunistic team. The Golden Knights keeper posted two shutouts, including a Game 6, series-deciding blanking, and Fleury's.935 save percentage across six games was decidedly better than Jones'.895 mark.
All told, the Sharks scored 14 goals to the Golden Knights' 22, and that only tells one small part of the story.
The San Jose Sharks are reeling after suffering a playoff elimination at the hands of the Vegas Golden Knights, but in case fans were looking where to point a finger of blame, the goaltender should not be the target. The Ramblers were a big deal, considering how far they got before being taken down by MI, and every win they had in the tournament got hyped more and more nationally.
Now, the Jets are soaring high coming off a 6-2 victory over the Presidents' Trophy-winning Predators on Saturday, and if they can keep that momentum going long enough to earn a Conference Final bid, they'll push the Golden Knights to the brink of their capabilities. Liverpool followed suit on Wednesday, sealing their passage to the Kiev final on May 26 with a 7-4 aggregate win over Roma. Benzema hasn't been playing regularly as a starter and was a surprise addition to the lineup by Zidane.
In game six against the Sharks, Fleury made 28 saves for the shutout. After all, they were just an expansion team and most of their players consisted of guys other teams did not find of value to their franchise. Evander Kane had a deflection hit the cross bar in final minute of the period. The Sharks offence was good, but the Golden Knights offence was too much.
"I thought we had some good starts", Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer said. "Like I said, we had some chances". "I think we had a couple of those that didn't go in".
Most of the Sharks' best opportunities to score came in the first period, when they came ridiculously close on a handful of occasions to take an early lead. The Sharks iced the fifth-oldest roster in the National Hockey League heading into the post-season, and the answer for getting younger doesn't appear to be coming from within.
With the way Fleury has been playing and the excellent defense demonstrated in front of him, Vegas felt pretty good going into the locker room with a 2-0 in what could be the deciding game of the second round series.
Suzuki was Owen Sound's leading scorer in the regular season notching 100 points for the first time in his major junior career with 42 goals and 59 assists.
