Photos circulating on social media show people wading through muddy water, some carrying bodies retrieved in the aftermath of the disaster.
The Kenyan Red Cross estimates that up to 500 families were affected by the disaster, which took place some 150 kilometers (90 miles) northwest of Nairobi.
The dam burst has again raised concerns about the state of Kenya's infrastructure.
