The official declined to say how long the first meeting is expected to last, but said it will take place prior to an expanded meeting where US and North Korean officials would be in attendance.

The spokesman said Trump told Moon he would send Pompeo to Seoul immediately after the summit to explain its outcome.

Mr Trump said he felt "really great" about the meeting.
The summit will be the first between a North Korean leader and a sitting American president, and could define the fate of millions, along with the leaders' own political futures.

The Hurricane Center said the storm could generate swells that cause life-threatening surf and rip currents over the coming days. Forecasters believe Aletta will keep the worst conditions well offshore, which will limit the potential for any threats to land.

They are looking to hammer out a deal that may see North Korea giving up its nuclear weapons programme in exchange for security guarantees.
North Korea's central news agency on Monday proclaimed a "changed era", and promised talks on "the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean peninsula" as well as "the issue of realizing the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula".
James Walsh, a senior research associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with extensive experience in back-channel negotiations with the Pyongyang government said that the focus on personal chemistry rather than technical details represented a win for the North Korea.
The seemingly warm exchange between Mr. Trump and Mr. Kim on Tuesday was particularly striking, coming just days after a public clash between the US president and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
As Trump was trying to build a bridge with Kim, he was smashing longtime alliances with Western allies, withdrawing from the G-7 joint communique, escalating a trade fight and launching blistering criticism against Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Mr Lee is slated to meet separately with each leader at the Istana in the run-up to the summit.
