In a shocking upset, U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley has been defeated by a 28-year-old Bernie Sanders supporter in the Democratic congressional primary in NY.
The National Rifle Association seems to have taken an interest in our local political scene, thanks to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's upset victory against Congressman Joe Crowley last night, and the gun group's hair-trigger sixth sense for knowing when a white man has had something taken away from him.
If she wins the reliably Democratic district in November, it will make her the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.
It was the first defeat of the primary season for a Democratic incumbent.
Crowley has been in the House of Representatives for close to 20 years.
Citing scheduling conflicts, he missed a debate in the Bronx with Ocasio-Cortez, sending former city councilwoman Annabel Palma as a surrogate. Instead, she managed to raise more small donations than any other congressional candidate in NY, which allowed her to campaign sincerely on a platform for economic justice, while exposing Crowley as a centrist who does not represent real change. Her student years, he says, revealed a "rare combination of heart, smarts, and the ability to use her voice to bring people together", along with an uncommon trait: "She listens-I mean, actually listens-when you speak". Interviewed in Vogue on Monday, Ocasio-Cortez said of socialism: "There is no other force, there is no other party, there is no other real ideology out there right now that is asserting the minimum elements necessary to lead a dignified American life".
Heather Locklear arrested for alleged attack on deputy, EMT
In April, she pleaded not guilty to similar counts of battery against a sheriff's officer, after being arrested in February. And this is the second time Locklear has been arrested for alleged assault of an officer this year.
"Our district is overwhelmingly people of color, it's working class, it's very immigrant - and it hasn't had the representation we've needed", Ocasio-Cortez, a second-generation Puerto Rican, told HuffPost earlier this month.
Crowley overwhelmingly outspent Ocasio-Cortez, by a margin of 18 to one, but it wasn't enough.
In the moving two-minute clip, the educator and organizer lists the need for "Medicare-for-all, tuition-free public college, a federal jobs guarantee and criminal justice reform", and highlights her presence in the community as much as Crowley's clear absence.
Cynthia Nixon, who is running for NY governor - and will face a state primary in September - endorsed Ocasio-Cortez Monday, with just hours left before the election. "I don't know how he could be the Queens Democratic Party chairman", said Willam Salgado, head of the Pan-American Democratic Association, the only Queens club to endorse the 28-year-old challenger.
"We look back at a lot of that time of legislation as a mistake now", she said, "And I think that ICE is right there as a part of it".
"They made a choice in one district".
