According to USA entertainment website TMZ, Jackson passed away early on Wednesday morning after he had been in hospital for terminal pancreatic cancer. His wife, Katherine, had been at his bedside as were some of Joe's children and grandchildren, TMZ reported.
He suffered five strokes within a five-year period, with the most recent coming during a July 2015 trip to Brazil to celebrate his 87th birthday.
Though Joe's management launched his children into superstardom, with Michael and his sister Janet making names for themselves after going solo, he was also infamous for physically and emotionally abusing his children. "It's now a waiting game, and the end could come at any time".
Joe Jackson's famous family is deep in mourning after his tragic death, and are paying tribute to their father and grandfather online. The couple shared nine children together including Maureen, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, La Toya, Marlon, Randy Sr., Janet and Michael - who died at the age of 50 in 2009.
Jackson reportedly carried on a decades long extra-marital affair with Cheryl Terrell, a secretary 20 years his junior. "People wonder why I always have children around".
Michael alleged his father turned violent during rehearsals with The Jackson 5.

In April, she pleaded not guilty to similar counts of battery against a sheriff's officer, after being arrested in February. And this is the second time Locklear has been arrested for alleged assault of an officer this year.
During the 1960s, Jackson took control of his sons' burgeoning musical efforts and the Jackson 5 was born, later signing to Motown records in 1967. Carlos Keyes, representative for Jackson's son, Tito Jackson, confirmed Joe Jackson's death.

Michael's singing, dancing and charisma made him the focus of the group, which dominated the 1970s pop and R&B charts with No. 1 hits such as "I Want You Back", "ABC", "The Love You Save," "I'll Be There" and "Never Can Say Goodbye". After the birth of their first child, daughter Rebbie, in 1950, Jackson left boxing and became a full-time crane operator for US Steel to support his family.
The couple split a few times and lived apart for decades, but they reportedly never divorced.
That all came to a head after a 1993 interview in which a visibly frightened Michael Jackson told Oprah Winfrey that he had lived in fear of his father for his entire life. "And they treated everybody right".
He later said that he was glad he was tough because he ended up with children "everybody loved all over the world".
