Microsoft is said to be working on a new cheap Surface tablet. The basics: it's a 10-incher with an 1800 x 1200 pixel display, it weighs half a kilo (1.15 lbs), and starts at $400 - unfortunately sans the keyboard, as usual. But it doesn't lack for power, featuring a 7th Generation Intel Pentium Gold Processor 4415Y and a nine-hour battery life.
"When we designed this device, we had to ask ourselves what people want and need from a 10" Surface", Microsoft chief product officer Panos Panay wrote in a blog announcing the device.
With the inclusion of an integrated kickstand for the surface and with the well thought out keyboard and mouse experience, the Surface is a much better productivity machine, a much more convenient laptop replacement than an iPad.
Judge holds firm on deadline for reuniting immigrant families
While parents are held in jail to await trial by a judge, children are moved into accommodation managed by an HHS agency. In total, the authorities are holding around 11,800 minors who crossed the border illegally.
Currently, pre-orders are only available in US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Poland, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. It's nearly a surprise, as the more advanced Surface Pro doesn't have that yet (but we expect to see a refresh of the Surface Pro later this year).
Finally, we should note that the Surface Go is not now offered with 4G LTE support and you can only get a Wi-Fi one, while iPads are offered in both styles. Businesses and schools buying the device will get Windows 10 Pro, which they can put in S Mode if they wish. They will obviously use a metal body and will sport USB Type-C connectivity, as well as microSD support. However, it is not quite as powerful as the Surface Pro in terms of specifications and features. A Wi-Fi-only model will arrive first, with LTE-equipped versions launching later in the year.
Pricing starts at $399 for the entry-level model with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage, climbing to $549 for a Surface Go with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. You have to buy a Surface Go Type Cover (black) for $99 or a Signature Type Cover with Alcantara (Burgundy, Cobalt Blue, or Platinum) for $129. We've seen the Surface Go render and manipulate 3D imagery in a biology studies app with nary a stutter. One of the earliest incarnations of the Surface line, the Surface RT, fared poorly. This could work in Microsoft's favor in some ways because it might indicate that buyers are bored with what's now on offer and something new might reinvigorate sales. "The Go offers very similar specs to the most recent version of the iPad and the 10.5" iPad Pro, but without access to all of Apple's brand cachet or its multitude of App Store goodies.
