Real Time Astrology: December 2016

Good news: 2016 is nearly over! I think most will agree that this year has been exceptionally tough, owing to exceptional astrological space weather. Bad news: there’s still a full month left for 2016 to push our buttons. December 2016 has enough sweet surprises in stock to make us think it was saving the best for last. But, in keeping with the general theme this year, the good times won’t last.

So, enjoy the good times when they come! First things first, though. Mercury -our planet of communication- will be in Capricorn all month, having entered the taciturn sign December 3rd. Mercury in Capricorn isn’t verbose or demonstrative; effectiveness and prudence are more its vibe. Mercury will station retrograde on Monday, December 19th (until January 8th, 2017); obviously all Mercury retrograde periods result in funky communication but even before the retrograde you should expect a certain amount of reticence in yourself and others. Mercury in Capricorn is cynical and cautious about speaking its mind on subjects it isn’t fully informed on.

Some of the big shock waves we experienced in November were brought to us courtesy of Mars in Aquarius in mutual reception to Uranus retrograde in Aries. This mutual reception lasts until December 19th, when Mars enters Pisces. On Tuesday, December 6th, Mars in Aquarius will complete its sextile to Uranus retrograde in Aries (20 degrees each sign; 9:30 PM). This sextile should help create shock waves of a more productive manner, inspiring rather than simply agitating. Venus enters Aquarius on Wednesday, December 7th (8:51 AM) which will help lighten the mood for the rest of the month. Aquarius is the sign of bigger groups, friends and our larger human tribe. Mars in Aquarius sextile Uranus Rx in Aries and especially Venus in Aquarius is a recipe for agape love and mending broken fences within friendships and within our tribes.

The Sagittarius Sun will sextile Jupiter in Libra on Friday, December 9th (3:39 PM) and conjunct Saturn in Sagittarius the following day (5:51 PM). This is an interesting mix; Jupiter usually seen as jovial and larger than life, Saturn usually seen as stern and restrictive. In actuality, both are teachers in their own right from different schools of life. We will have a sextile between Jupiter in Libra and Saturn in Sagittarius that lasts the entire month, perfecting on Tuesday, December 27th (6:01 PM). This sextile teaches us how to properly temper our optimism (Jupiter) with realism (Saturn); our visions (Jupiter) with responsibility (Saturn). One of those things without the other would either be impractical or boring; the sextile weds the better qualities of both planets together and we feel this process unfolding when the Sun aspects the two teachers December 9th-10th.

Monday, December 12th is an unusual day, however. Sun trine Uranus is one I’d normally consider exciting in a good way, were it not for the Sun also squaring Chiron in Pisces. This just looks awkward and weird.

As previously stated, Mars enters Pisces on December 19th, just a couple hours before Mercury goes retrograde in Capricorn. This too looks rough and weird. Mars in Pisces is a more scattered, unfocused energy than we’ve had recently; drive will not be as strong. And, of course, remember Pisces is mutable and will essentially be triggering all the mutable hot spots of 2016.

We have a Full Moon in Gemini on Tuesday, December 13th and a New Moon in Capricorn on Thursday, December 29th. The Sun enters Capricorn on Wednesday, December 21st (4:44 AM) to start the winter solstice/equinox in the northern hemisphere. This too reflects a more taciturn mindset going into the rest of the month and closing out the year.

Christmas will be an adventure this year! On December 24th aka Christmas Eve, Saturn in Sagittarius perfects its trine to Uranus Rx in Aries at 20 degrees (6:20 AM). Expect surprises to reliable routines and prepare to ad lib! On Christmas Day, Venus -planet of beauty, values, love, relationships, and gifts- in humanitarian driven Aquarius will make three exact harmonious aspects: a trine to Jupiter in Libra (7:23 AM), a sextile to Uranus Rx in Aries (10:35 AM), and another sextile to Saturn in Sagittarius (12:33 PM). Venus kissing the planets of fortune, surprises and everyday reality spells a lovely Christmas indeed!

The very next day, the mood will see a big shift. We’ll have the first exact opposition between Jupiter in Libra and Uranus retrograde in Aries at 20 degrees each sign (12:35 PM). This has already been in effect for several weeks and will be in effect for a few months of 2017 as part of the ongoing cardinal T-square, however this opposition occurs on the same day that Mars in Pisces conjuncts the South Node in Pisces, opposes the North Node in Virgo and squares the Sagittarius Moon, effectively creating both mutable and cardinal T-squares. This doesn’t look good to me.

Saturn in Sagittarius square Chiron in Pisces on Wednesday, December 28th (5:07 PM) can show temporary malaise, depression, and physical unease, so take extra care of body and soul around this time. Uranus in Aries will station direct at 20 degrees on Thursday, December 29th (3:29 AM), the same day as the Capricorn New Moon. Uranus doesn’t figure into the lunation; however, both Aries and Capricorn are dominating, controlling cardinal signs that like to be the boss, and Uranus turning direct the same day as the New Moon indicates jockeying for power on both the personal and global levels. Cardinal signs are also instigators that get things moving, this day is one to watch as it may set a certain temperature opening up for 2017.

happy new year astrology 2017

  1. Wow, that’s a LOT of activity! But by now we shouldn’t expect less from a year that has been so insanely full of the same, in a more “locked up” fashion with all those nasty retros… eek!!

Uranus is going to oppose my Saturn/Jupiter constellation during 2017 and a couple of years forward. This conjunction lies in my 8th house as Uranus is traveling my 2nd. Difficulties in the work place and trouble staying in the same job without getting bored, resistance against commitment to working in a “2nd house manner” to secure my assets and finances has already been the themes so far of this transit.

. Could this opposition play out the same way as just described, you think? I might think that questions about morality (Libra in 8th) and balancing of duties vs responsibility could come to the fore – in a rather deeply unrooting manner, as Pluto is conjunct Saturn. Am I wrong here??

Having Capricorn Mercury natally, I agree. I read that Nature is exceedingly efficient. It does not use more than it needs to create what it needs to. So Capricorn-like.

I’m curious about your thoughts on what may happen with the Electoral College meeting on the day Mercury stations to go retrograde (and is within orb of a Pluto conjunction!). I haven’t really seen anyone comment on that topic yet.
