Hurry Up And Wait!: Mercury Retrograde In Aries & Taurus April 9th-May 3rd, 2017

Do you ever read much good about Mercury retrograde periods? They’re a notorious pain in the ass; even people who don’t follow astrology much or at all have heard the reputation Mercury retrograde has. The last Mercury retrograde fell largely in Capricorn and was particularly brutal, the kind of retrograde that earns its stereotype. Well, the upcoming Mercury retrograde from April 9th until May 3rd would like a chance to literally rearrange our thinking. It’s gonna get weird… [Read more…]

Real Time Astrology: New Moon In Aries March 27th, 2017

The first lunation after the spring equinox (Sun entering Aries) in the northern hemisphere occurs March 27th (9:57 P.M. CST) in the form of a New Moon at 7 degrees Aries. The most notable feature of this New Moon is the conjunction to love, relationships, money and aesthetics planet Venus, in detriment and retrograde at 3 degrees Aries. Venus in a martial sign is in a mutual reception to Mars in Taurus, also in detriment. Flirtatious fighting! To paraphrase Tina Turner, this Aries New Moon can do things nice and easy, but it’s more fun to serve it up nice and rough… [Read more…]

Real Time Astrology: March 2017

March marches along (sorry) at a fairly ho-hum pace at first, picking up the tempo by months end. This is, of course, Pisces season, with Mercury in Pisces until March 13th and the Sun in Pisces until March 20th. The most notable of the events in March has already occurred by the time of this post (sorry!): Venus stationing retrograde at 13 degrees Aries on Saturday, March 4th. Venus will remain retrograde until April 15th and will remain retrograde in Aries for the rest of March. (Venus will retrograde into Pisces in April). Venus is in detriment in Aries, meaning it has to work harder here than in any other sign to express it’s true nature. This goes double when Venus is retrograde. The focus is the turning of values inwards and away from the values of society, our values as sovereign individuals becomes more important. Venus retrograde in Aries often shows the need to stand up, defend, or fight for the right to express individualistic values. This retrograde could very well be the end of many relationships and partnerships this month; of those that remain intact, there will have to be a newfound respect for the rights of the other to have their own values that may or may not match yours. The ability or lack thereof to allow differences can be the make or break of alliances. [Read more…]

Real Time Astrology: January 2017

Water, water everywhere. January 2017 is dominated by a Pisces stellium, waterlogging the psychosphere. Everything is being absorbed at the expense of mental and emotional health, clarity and direction. A recent blog comment sums up the current underlying mood circulating unspoken: [Read more…]

Real Time Astrology: Full Moon Supermoon In Aries October 15th/16th, 2016

Wild, sexy and dangerous, the Full Moon Supermoon at 23 degrees Aries occurs Saturday, October 15th or  Sunday, October 16th, depending on your location. (It is exact at 11:23 PM Central Standard Time on Saturday night.) This Aries Full Moon is also a supermoon, meaning it coincides with lunar perigee, or the point at which the Moon is closest to the Earth. Huge, highly visible Full Moon to match the volatile emotional temperature. The Full Moon will be in very tight conjunction to Uranus retrograde at 22 degrees Aries, and will square Pluto at 15 degrees Capricorn. That’s right, it is bringing back the dormant Uranus-Pluto square! The lunation is also in wide opposition to Mercury at 15 degrees Libra. Pluto at 15 degrees Capricorn means the orb is wide for Pluto too, but Pluto is a heavy hitter and with the tight conjunction of Uranus, the story of the lunation will be the temporary cardinal T-square which will set the tone for the longer lasting cardinal T-square involving Uranus-Pluto by years end and into 2017.

I’ve said before that the lunar cycles sensitize us to the larger transits; bringing the big issues home. This particular Full Moon in the pioneering sign of Aries will be sensitizing us to the next curveball coming our way. 2016 was a rough go for many people; two steps forward, one step back, constant uncertainty. Much of that peaked in September during the final eclipse season of the year. The Libra New Moon at the end of September, being the first lunation after eclipse season, helped shake off the feeling of getting nowhere. Now, this Aries Full Moon draws our attention to the future, the shape of things to come.

No, Your Astrology Sign Hasn’t Changed

astrology new signs zodiac change

Astrology clock, Prague

Once again, there’s a bunch of stories being floated around (like this one) about how everyone’s star sign is different and wrong, astrology is completely ignorant of astronomy and therefore inaccurate, and of course how us astrologers and astrology lovers are just ignorant of all science of any kind. Bunch of low IQ knuckle draggers, we are! I don’t think many of my readers believe the stories being circulated about how astrological Sun signs are no longer accurate, since my readers tend to be more astrology literate (and more literate in general) but I have seen questions about this showing up in my blog dashboard coming from search engines, so I figure it’s as great a time as any to clarify:

Your astrology sign has not changed and will never change.

The reason behind these stories claiming everyone’s zodiac sign is different than what astrologers are telling people, and that there’s a 13th sign called Ophiucus that astrologers aren’t telling the population about, is because NASA and other astronomical organizations will occasionally send out news of changes in the location of constellations. The constellations do move. What astronomers don’t ever trouble themselves to clarify when they trash astrology publicly is that the constellations do not figure into astrological zodiac signs. The zodiac signs share their names with the constellations, but yes astrologers do know the difference.

Astrology uses a 360 degree circle divided into 12 separate signs of 30 degrees each. The starting point of the circle is based not on the starting point of constellations but the beginning of the March equinox, since the astrological zodiac is based on an Earth view relationship to the Sun. Just as your wall calendar is divided into 12 segments based on our relationship to the Sun. The starting point at the March equinox is known as “the Aries point” which is zero degrees of the astrological sign Aries. This has never changed and will never change and it’s not because astrologers are ignorant of astronomy (in 2016?! puh-leez) but because we use a different system of measurement. The static astrological system of measurement used by astrologers just shares the names of the moving astronomical constellations, that’s all.

You’re still the sign you think you are, ok?

A few years back, the very astute traditional astrologer Deborah Houlding did a full writeup for Astrodienst clarifying the confusion, if you are looking for an in-depth explanation I recommend reading the highlighted link. Per Houlding’s article:

“Why is the zodiac divided into twelve equal divisions, rather than any other number of equal or unequal divisions? For the same reason that there are twelve calendar months in a year. The zodiac is a circle which maps out the Sun’s position throughout the year… Hence the zodiac adopts the general template that is used in all calendars: there are four major divisions, defined in the zodiac by four equal quarters separated by 90°, which determine where the ecliptic intersects with the equator to create the astronomical commencement of the four seasons…

The zodiac is a very elegant combination of astronomical and calendrical principles. Although the correlation of zodiac degrees and days in a year is not precise, the use of the zodiac as a reference system that monitors planetary movements and interactions, or considers the impact of seasonal changes, remains perfectly valid. The system has a great depth of philosophical reasoning built into its design, partly because the period in which its development began to aid mathematical astronomy occurred at the time that philosophers, such as Pythagoras, were exploring the mystical nature of shapes and geometrical relationships, and generating metaphysical theories on why numerical arrangements could determine qualities as well as quantities…”

Memorize Houlding’s explanations for the next time some science-ier than thou smartass tries to puff themselves up by ridiculing astrology lovers.

Wanna Seduce Aries? Seduce Their Mars Sign First!

The question of how to appeal to Aries – the sign of high vitality and low attention span – was brought up recently in a consultation with a client. I felt it was worthy of its own explanation in a post. A lot of people read those by-the-numbers formulaic astrology instructions on how to seduce this or that Sun or rising sign, with mixed results. Probably the very last sign you’d want to try such an approach with is Aries. It’s a common mistake to think that Aquarius is the most individualistic sign of the zodiac; that title actually belongs to Aries. Arise is the first sign of the zodiac and as such identifies closely with its ego and desires much the same way as a child does: purely and instinctively and immediately. Aries likes to think of itself as being as unique as a single snowflake (regardless of how true that might actually be), so approaching them as if they can be neatly summarized, as if you already know something about them, is the very last thing any of them want.

A better attempt of understanding how the Aries ego and energy is expressed, and how to pique their curiosity enough to want to pursue/be pursued, is to look at their Mars sign. You may think that passion for everyone is shown by their Mars; that’s true, but more true for Aries. As the ruling planet of individualistic, independent Aries, Mars colors each Aries persons approach to romance and seduction. Looking at the sign and house that Mars is in as well as the aspects it makes in the Aries persons birth chart will provide you with a lot of information about what gets them excited. Not all Aries want to pursue or be pursued in aggressive, Mars-y ways; their love style may not be obvious and it’s better to find out what they really want than to assume.

Good News For Aries, Cancer, Libra & Capricorn – Jupiter In Libra Will Be Smiling On You!

The cardinal signs have had it rough the past few years, owing largely to the square between Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn. There’s a bit of relief on the horizon, though, as planet of luck and good fortune Jupiter moves into cardinal sign Libra on September 9th. This transit will last until October 2017, and anyone with planets or angles in Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn will feel optimism and an urge to grow related to where Jupiter in Libra is transiting in your chart.

Obviously, those who have Libra in their birth charts will get the biggest kiss from Jupiter. Many Libra Sun folks will experience a Sun-Jupiter conjunction in their solar returns (a predictive chart cast every birthday, lasting until the next birthday); early degree Libra Sun’s will experience this conjunction in their solar returns in 2016, later degree Libra Sun’s will have this signature in their 2017 solar returns. People with Libra risings/ascendants -whether natal or progressed- should watch out for the time period when Jupiter crosses over the ascendant and into the first house; new opportunities will be more obvious and will probably be a result of receiving or seeking out attention from others. People with natal Jupiter in Libra will, of course, experience their Jupiter Return; completing one major cycle of expansion and growth and beginning a new one afresh. People with other Libra placements should look to the house involved to determine when and where extra luck and good times will present itself.

However, the other cardinal signs won’t be left out, either. Jupiter will be opposing Aries and squaring Cancer and Capricorn. I know these are supposedly “difficult” aspects. However, Jupiter is beneficial wherever it is, in whatever aspect. I actually don’t mind hard Jupiter aspects, they’re productive! The easy aspects often feel so easy that one is inclined to do nothing at all with their potential. Jupiter opposing or squaring Aries, Cancer and Capricorn is a transit that can bear fruit, even if it means you get a little kick in the butt to get you going.

Remember, though, that one caveat of Jupiter transits impacting your natal chart in a big way is the tendency to put on weight! This is especially true if Jupiter is hitting the natal ascendant, Sun, Moon, or Venus. Good times can lead to overeating, overdrinking, oversleeping…

Jupiter in Libra will also sextile those with natal planets or angles in Leo and Sagittarius, and trine natal Gemini and Aquarius. The sextile and trine are easy aspects, but aren’t particularly motivating or productive. They do point to either a reduction in stress or a peaceful feeling related to the areas of life in the natal chart that are impacted. The North Node moves into Leo May 10th, 2017, starting an auspicious cycle for Leo; Jupiter in Libra sextile the North Node in Leo late summer and early autumn 2017 is a particularly robust time period for Leo’s (especially those who have Leo in the mid to late degrees).

Even if you aren’t going to be feeling the effects of Jupiter’s transit of Libra in a big way, Jupiter is always our little ace in the hole and especially now that Jupiter is free of the sign of its detriment. You will still want to look to the house of your natal chart that Jupiter will be moving over to see where there’s potential for success that you can take advantage of!
