Real Time Astrology: Full Moon In Cancer January 12th, 2017

The first lunation of 2017 starts with the Full Moon at 22 degrees Cancer on Thursday, January 12th (5:34 AM). As this is a Full Moon that occurs during the night for a majority of readers, please keep in mind we’ll feel the effects leading up to it the evening before. And we’ll definitely feel this one, with the Moon in the sign she resides. The Full Moon trines Mars at 18 degrees Pisces and Chiron at 21 degrees Pisces; harmonious watery aspects that emphasize the healing sensitivity potential. Mostly, though, the story here is the cardinal Grand Cross the Cancer Full Moon makes: squaring exact Jupiter at 22 degrees Libra, square Uranus at 20 degrees Aries and opposing Pluto at 17 degrees Capricorn.

The cardinal Grand Cross has multiple ways of playing out. Whether you find this stressful or exhilarating depends on how you handle the cardinal signs in general. For sure, it can be pushy, bossy, brash. Emotional turmoil and mood swings. It can also push people out of the dredge of the Pisces stellium active in January and get them moving in the right direction again. Cardinal signs initiate, and all four are bound up in this Full Moon. Many will feel emboldened to take on things they’d normally shy away from. If you find this Full Moon too much to handle, don’t assume everyone feels the way you do. Some will find it exciting in the best sense and won’t have much patience for people not moving at their speed.

Considering much of 2016 was dominated by a long lasting mutable T-square and on/off mutable Grand Cross, starting the 2017 lunar cycle with the Moon in domicile forming a cardinal Grand Cross shows an early rebalancing of energies to be played out in the year to come. We’re leaving behind the process of slowly adapting to new realities and now must act on them.

The aspects to Mars and Chiron in Pisces will definitely be lighting up our dream life, those of you who connect your dreams to the lunar cycles should pay attention here. Overall, while this Full Moon screams “go big or go home!” it’s actually one that most will find productive. Not necessarily easy, but fruitful. Protecting our emotional needs (Full Moon in Cancer) from the death grind of politics and business (Pluto in Capricorn); forming new and/or better alliances (Jupiter in Libra) while protecting and asserting our individuality (Uranus in Aries). The lunar cycles sensitize us to the larger transits affecting Earth as a whole and I fully expect this Cancer Full Moon to bring home movement from the big picture. Watch out for world events and especially financial/money news.

As always, look to the house of your natal chart that this Full Moon in Cancer and cardinal Grand Cross falls in for further information about how it will affect you personally. Read here for easy instructions if you don’t know how to find it.

Good News For Aries, Cancer, Libra & Capricorn – Jupiter In Libra Will Be Smiling On You!

The cardinal signs have had it rough the past few years, owing largely to the square between Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn. There’s a bit of relief on the horizon, though, as planet of luck and good fortune Jupiter moves into cardinal sign Libra on September 9th. This transit will last until October 2017, and anyone with planets or angles in Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn will feel optimism and an urge to grow related to where Jupiter in Libra is transiting in your chart.

Obviously, those who have Libra in their birth charts will get the biggest kiss from Jupiter. Many Libra Sun folks will experience a Sun-Jupiter conjunction in their solar returns (a predictive chart cast every birthday, lasting until the next birthday); early degree Libra Sun’s will experience this conjunction in their solar returns in 2016, later degree Libra Sun’s will have this signature in their 2017 solar returns. People with Libra risings/ascendants -whether natal or progressed- should watch out for the time period when Jupiter crosses over the ascendant and into the first house; new opportunities will be more obvious and will probably be a result of receiving or seeking out attention from others. People with natal Jupiter in Libra will, of course, experience their Jupiter Return; completing one major cycle of expansion and growth and beginning a new one afresh. People with other Libra placements should look to the house involved to determine when and where extra luck and good times will present itself.

However, the other cardinal signs won’t be left out, either. Jupiter will be opposing Aries and squaring Cancer and Capricorn. I know these are supposedly “difficult” aspects. However, Jupiter is beneficial wherever it is, in whatever aspect. I actually don’t mind hard Jupiter aspects, they’re productive! The easy aspects often feel so easy that one is inclined to do nothing at all with their potential. Jupiter opposing or squaring Aries, Cancer and Capricorn is a transit that can bear fruit, even if it means you get a little kick in the butt to get you going.

Remember, though, that one caveat of Jupiter transits impacting your natal chart in a big way is the tendency to put on weight! This is especially true if Jupiter is hitting the natal ascendant, Sun, Moon, or Venus. Good times can lead to overeating, overdrinking, oversleeping…

Jupiter in Libra will also sextile those with natal planets or angles in Leo and Sagittarius, and trine natal Gemini and Aquarius. The sextile and trine are easy aspects, but aren’t particularly motivating or productive. They do point to either a reduction in stress or a peaceful feeling related to the areas of life in the natal chart that are impacted. The North Node moves into Leo May 10th, 2017, starting an auspicious cycle for Leo; Jupiter in Libra sextile the North Node in Leo late summer and early autumn 2017 is a particularly robust time period for Leo’s (especially those who have Leo in the mid to late degrees).

Even if you aren’t going to be feeling the effects of Jupiter’s transit of Libra in a big way, Jupiter is always our little ace in the hole and especially now that Jupiter is free of the sign of its detriment. You will still want to look to the house of your natal chart that Jupiter will be moving over to see where there’s potential for success that you can take advantage of!

Real Time Astrology: July 2016

Each month this year seems to have been wildly different than the preceding one. June 2016 was peak intensity and a tough act to follow. Not all was bad news, but even the good news seemed to be of the “making lemonade out of lemons” variety. For most, it was nonstop stress and worry and confusion. July 2016 will start off edgy, but I will say that it will end up much better than it begins, so enjoy the simple pleasures of the season while you can.

The cycles and rhythms of our inner and outer lives show their complexity at the New Moon at 12 degrees Cancer on July 4th, 2016. The Cancer New Moon will of course conjunct the Cancer Sun; along with Mercury at 9 degrees Cancer and Venus at 20 degrees Cancer, we will have a stellium in the Moon-ruled sign of hearth and home, family, heritage and roots, and patriotism. Occuring as it is on Independence Day in America, the love of country will be visibly celebrated here but felt everywhere, celebrated or not. The Cancer New Moon and stellium will sextile the Jupiter-North Node conjunction in Virgo (17 and 14 degrees, respectively) and trine Neptune retrograde at 11 Pisces. Those are lovely, supportive aspects. It’s the opposition to Pluto retrograde at 16 degrees Capricorn that can lead us down strange roads.

Happy Birthday, America (2016 Edition)

Last year, for my post on America’s solar return  (falling every year on Independence Day/4th of July) I talked a little about how, as a country, America is experiencing birthing pains and death gasps simultaneously. Both grow stronger in this new growth cycle of the 2016/2017 solar return.

This year, the 4th of July coincides with a powerful New Moon in Cancer. This New Moon will feature, of course, in the solar return of the United States:   [Read more…]

Real Time Astrology: Full Moon in Sagittarius June 20, 2016

Unfinished business is the theme of the Full Moon at 29 degrees Sagittarius on Monday, June 20th at 6:02 AM CST. This is the second of two Sagittarius Full Moons in a row (the first was in May). The Full Moon will of course oppose the Sun at 29 Gemini, as well as opposing Venus at 3 degrees Cancer, trine Uranus at 23 degrees Aries and squaring Chiron at 25 degrees Pisces. Except for the square to Chiron, the other aspects aren’t particularly troublesome and in fact are nice ones to have, especially the opposition to Venus. The troubles arising during this Full Moon are in the details and in the background noise.  [Read more…]

Halloween/Day of the Dead/All Saints & Souls Day October 31 – November 2, 2015

How fitting that the Scorpio season holidays honoring our ancestors will be dominated by a Cancer Moon this year. Give some serious thought this time round to the history and underlying intent of the traditions we’re keeping alive through the centuries. The beginning of the three day religious and cultural celebrations of Halloween, Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), All Saints Day and All Souls Day begins of course on October 31st, this year falling on a Saturday and runs through Monday, November 2nd; the Moon moves into Cancer early Saturday morning and remains there until late Sunday night. The Cancer Moon will be strongly aspected over the course of the weekend: opposing Pluto (death, birth, afterlife & transformation) in Capricorn,  sextile the Jupiter – Venus – Mars conjunction in Virgo, trine Neptune and Chiron in Pisces,  square Uranus in Aries and trine the Sun in Scorpio. The morning of Monday November 2nd the Moon enters Leo and Mercury enters Scorpio, creating the right channels to communicate what was felt over the weekend and finish the third day of remembrances with soulful expression.

There shouldn’t be any less fun this year than any other year for those who only celebrate these holidays with children or on a strictly superficial level. The Cancer Moon lasting all weekend trine the Scorpio Sun does indicate delving deeper into both the history of the holidays themselves and the history of the ancestors being remembered. Cancer is a sign that loves and knows its history, retaining (hoarding, even) the things left behind in haste or considered useless. It knows the tides change and such things will be useful and important again at some point or another. It clings to the past like no other and yet, as a cardinal sign, initiates change in the waters it is comfortable in. It knows the tides change and what seems groundbreaking today can often be old habits and patterns dressed up in new clothing. There truly is nothing new under Cancer. As such, it is the sign most closely associated with heritage, genealogy,  familial lineage and roots. Scorpio is of course the sign most closely associated with death itself, with the legacies that survive from beyond the grave, with the transformation of raw energy from one state to another.  This trine between the Scorpio Sun and the Cancer Moon this Halloween/Day of the Dead weekend brings the messages of the holidays home for those perceptive enough to see these things for what they are. There are deep influences running the scenes here but not necessarily spooky, so don’t let imagination and marketing lead you down a different path.

What do your ancestors mean to you? What does their legacy mean to you in the here and now? How much do you even know of their struggles to survive, how hard they pushed forward and kept the life cycle in motion? Their traditions, their understanding of God and the spirit world,  the worlds within ourselves?  What will you pass on from beyond the grave once you’ve become an ancestor yourself? Whatever your feelings of your family’s past, you inherit more than physical traits and disease genes through your DNA. What else has genetic memory passed along through the generations?  Where does this “memory” even have its roots? Why does DNA itself look like a language that is meant to be read? Questions to ask yourself under the Cancer Moon; questions to ask of others once Mercury slips into Scorpio.

This is a great time to not only decide to change or continue traditions pertaining to death and honoring the deceased but also begin new ones. There is a mix of all four elements at work in the cosmos at this time (water, most notably,  followed by earth, fire and air) so incorporate from the elements as feels right to you. Rituals and traditions can add focused, tangible meaning to the proceedings but remember they are not necessary.  The real magic always lies in our hearts and souls.

For those in the U.S., daylight savings time ends this weekend, at 2:00 a.m. Sunday November 1st so set your clocks back one hour. Extra hour of sleep, extra hour for the dreams that will be more active under this strong Cancer Moon. Pay attention to your dreams this weekend.  Your ancestors and the other angels from somewhere beyond know we are listening to them more than usual and can come through to us in our dreams. Even the strongest dreams should still be gentle and not spooky.
