Real Time Astrology: March 2017

March marches along (sorry) at a fairly ho-hum pace at first, picking up the tempo by months end. This is, of course, Pisces season, with Mercury in Pisces until March 13th and the Sun in Pisces until March 20th. The most notable of the events in March has already occurred by the time of this post (sorry!): Venus stationing retrograde at 13 degrees Aries on Saturday, March 4th. Venus will remain retrograde until April 15th and will remain retrograde in Aries for the rest of March. (Venus will retrograde into Pisces in April). Venus is in detriment in Aries, meaning it has to work harder here than in any other sign to express it’s true nature. This goes double when Venus is retrograde. The focus is the turning of values inwards and away from the values of society, our values as sovereign individuals becomes more important. Venus retrograde in Aries often shows the need to stand up, defend, or fight for the right to express individualistic values. This retrograde could very well be the end of many relationships and partnerships this month; of those that remain intact, there will have to be a newfound respect for the rights of the other to have their own values that may or may not match yours. The ability or lack thereof to allow differences can be the make or break of alliances. [Read more…]

Real Time Astrology: Full Moon In Cancer January 12th, 2017

The first lunation of 2017 starts with the Full Moon at 22 degrees Cancer on Thursday, January 12th (5:34 AM). As this is a Full Moon that occurs during the night for a majority of readers, please keep in mind we’ll feel the effects leading up to it the evening before. And we’ll definitely feel this one, with the Moon in the sign she resides. The Full Moon trines Mars at 18 degrees Pisces and Chiron at 21 degrees Pisces; harmonious watery aspects that emphasize the healing sensitivity potential. Mostly, though, the story here is the cardinal Grand Cross the Cancer Full Moon makes: squaring exact Jupiter at 22 degrees Libra, square Uranus at 20 degrees Aries and opposing Pluto at 17 degrees Capricorn.

The cardinal Grand Cross has multiple ways of playing out. Whether you find this stressful or exhilarating depends on how you handle the cardinal signs in general. For sure, it can be pushy, bossy, brash. Emotional turmoil and mood swings. It can also push people out of the dredge of the Pisces stellium active in January and get them moving in the right direction again. Cardinal signs initiate, and all four are bound up in this Full Moon. Many will feel emboldened to take on things they’d normally shy away from. If you find this Full Moon too much to handle, don’t assume everyone feels the way you do. Some will find it exciting in the best sense and won’t have much patience for people not moving at their speed.

Considering much of 2016 was dominated by a long lasting mutable T-square and on/off mutable Grand Cross, starting the 2017 lunar cycle with the Moon in domicile forming a cardinal Grand Cross shows an early rebalancing of energies to be played out in the year to come. We’re leaving behind the process of slowly adapting to new realities and now must act on them.

The aspects to Mars and Chiron in Pisces will definitely be lighting up our dream life, those of you who connect your dreams to the lunar cycles should pay attention here. Overall, while this Full Moon screams “go big or go home!” it’s actually one that most will find productive. Not necessarily easy, but fruitful. Protecting our emotional needs (Full Moon in Cancer) from the death grind of politics and business (Pluto in Capricorn); forming new and/or better alliances (Jupiter in Libra) while protecting and asserting our individuality (Uranus in Aries). The lunar cycles sensitize us to the larger transits affecting Earth as a whole and I fully expect this Cancer Full Moon to bring home movement from the big picture. Watch out for world events and especially financial/money news.

As always, look to the house of your natal chart that this Full Moon in Cancer and cardinal Grand Cross falls in for further information about how it will affect you personally. Read here for easy instructions if you don’t know how to find it.

The Grown-Up Job Of Thinking For Yourself: Mercury Retrograde In Sagittarius & Capricorn December 19, 2016-January 8, 2017

Are you really in control of your own mind? Are your thoughts really your thoughts, natural and organic, or have your individual thoughts been replaced with the thoughts of others that you’ve mistaken as your own?

Worthy questions to ponder as we close out 2016 and open 2017 with a Mercury retrograde period, which will start and take place largely in the sign of Capricorn and end in the sign of Sagittarius. Sagittarius is the sign of the pursuit of Truth and the higher mind of beliefs and philosophy. We start our Mercury retrograde shadow period in this sign. When Mercury turns retrograde on December 19th, it will do so in Capricorn and conjunct Pluto in Capricorn  (15 and 16 degrees, respectively). Mercury retrograde is a time of divorcing our minds from the thought processes of anyone or anything external and paying closer attention to our individual mind; conjunct Pluto shows that this divorcing process will be more obvious during this Mercury retrograde than most, as Mercury Rx conjunct Pluto is mental purging. This purging is necessary to reclaiming the authority of our organic thoughts (Capricorn being the sign of authority – both our own and that of others). [Read more…]

Real Time Astrology: December 2016

Good news: 2016 is nearly over! I think most will agree that this year has been exceptionally tough, owing to exceptional astrological space weather. Bad news: there’s still a full month left for 2016 to push our buttons. December 2016 has enough sweet surprises in stock to make us think it was saving the best for last. But, in keeping with the general theme this year, the good times won’t last. [Read more…]

Real Time Astrology: Full Moon Supermoon In Taurus November 14, 2016

The one of a kind Full Moon at 22 degrees Taurus takes place Monday, November 14th (7:52 AM CST). You’re going to be seeing a lot written about this Moon, not just because it is also a Supermoon -occuring at perigee- but also because it’s the largest Full Moon Supermoon since 1948; we won’t see one this visibly huge again until 2034! This Full Moon will be nearly 15% larger and 30% brighter than any regular Full Moon. It will be at its biggest and brightest during the night before, so stay up late on Sunday November 13th or get up early Monday November 14th to take in the full Full Moon effect! [Read more…]

Venus-Pluto: Lovely, Dark And Deep

I have a random request: Can you do an article about Venus-Pluto? (Question brought to by my upcoming transit Venus conjunct natal Pluto. But we also have that wild Thanksgiving T-square with Jupiter-Pluto-Uranus which has Venus conjunct Pluto exact. So it could be of general interest too right?) But it seems like it always brings so much angst…and not much else. ~ bomega

This was a question asked by a reader in the comments section just before Mercury retrograde in Virgo, which is why I didn’t respond right away. We do have a Venus-Pluto conjunction coming up in time for Thanksgiving, and it’s Scorpio season, so why not take a look at Plutonic love? [Read more…]

How Prepared Are You For Uranus In Taurus?

I live in the literal seismic epicenter of fracking territory. At the time my mother was born here -northeastern Oklahoma- it was Indian reservation (though her birthplace is now no longer reservation) which basically means the land was/is so shit that the U.S. government thought it worthless and handed it off to people they tried but failed to wipe off the earth. Red dirt country. In my mother’s lifetime, the land here has transformed from being seen as less than nothing to being one of the most valuable in the country, hence the fracking.

We see the same scenario playing out now with the protests over the North Dakota pipeline, which has brought the largest gathering of North American indigenous peoples together -along with environmentally concerned people of all stripes- to fight to preserve the Badlands, throwaway reservation and ranch land that has also suddenly become valuable. Both the fracking here in Oklahoma and the Dakota Access Pipeline are examples of how people can write off the land -and the people living on and working that land- as having no value one minute and then urgently fighting over the untapped, unrecognized resources the next.

There’s more than environmental issues that lie behind the fight over fracking and pipelines. Fracking has brought jobs in a time when people desperately need them. Fracking has lowered the price of natural gas for consumers in the time of a shaky economy, and created energy independence in the U.S. for the first time and also at a time when foreign relations are unraveling. Fracking has also, of course, has led to an increase in earthquakes by about 600% in areas where the fracturing occurs. So, while it isn’t smart to run head first on a massive scale into damaging the land we live on with unknown consequences, there are economic and geopolitical consequences for not doing so that can’t be ignored, either. What do you do when you’re forced to destroy something to save something else?

The devaluing and sudden re-valuing of resources, the bringing together of people with common-unity in the valuing of the earth, the money and politics and polarizing outrage behind all of it… it’s all very Uranus in Taurus. Which is very concerning, considering we are still approximately a year and a half away from Uranus entering Taurus. If this is the financial/political/environmental/spiritual quagmire we find ourselves in now, what surprises are in store once we’re actually in the Uranus in Taurus era?  [Read more…]

Weirdo Book Reviews: Star.Ships and The Chaos Protocols by Gordon White

I am going to try to do one book review or recommendation each month for books that in some shape, form or fashion tie in with astrology. Some will, of course, be strictly astrology texts, but what’s the fun in doing only those? So, I’m going to try to include more unexpected choices as well, even fiction if it’s interesting enough and maybe pop culture references or other media.

For the first such Weirdo Book Review, I thought I would start with two that came out just this year. The author, Gordon White, is most famous for his highly popular chaos magic blog Rune Soup which blends what he refers to as “practical enchantment” with historical occult information, present day world events and economic forecasting techniques, such as those used by Martin Armstrong and Catherine Austin Fitts. This year, White released his first two books back to back: the first book Star.Ships: A Prehistory Of The Spirits looks at how our current understanding of higher mysteries is informed by our ancestors’ journeys and what they passed down to us; while his second book The Chaos Protocols gives a fresh, modern way of applying such powerful knowledge to our everyday lives.
