Real Time Astrology: New Moon in Gemini June 4th-5th, 2016

The frenetic and fun New Moon at 14 degrees Gemini takes place Saturday, June 4th at 10:00 PM CST  (depending on your time zone, it will be in the wee hours of Sunday, June 5th.) The Sun-Moon conjunction will also be in exact conjunction to Venus, also at 14 degrees Gemini, and forming a very tight mutable Grand Cross. The mutable Grand Cross includes the Gemini New Moon-Venus conjunction squaring Jupiter at 14 degrees Virgo and the North Node at 17 Virgo; squaring Neptune at 12 degrees Pisces, and opposing Saturn retrograde at 12 degrees Sagittarius.

As previously mentioned, Gemini (along with the other mutable signs) are bicorporeal or “double-bodied” signs, meaning they relate to concepts of duality and inhabiting different worlds simultaneously. While the cardinal signs initiate change, the mutable signs (which precede the cardinal signs) facilitate changes; the cardinal signs start new seasons (each one occurs at equinox) and the mutable signs prepare us for the changing season. As confusing as a mutable Grand Cross is, it is demanding we adapt to survive and move into the future.  [Read more…]

Real Time Astrology: New Moon in Sagittarius December 11, 2015

In the final month of 2015, which will be remembered more for the tension and random flare ups than anything else, one bright spot on the horizon is the benign New Moon at 19 degrees Sagittarius on Friday, December 11th at 4:29 AM CST. (Obviously, some folks in different time zones will experience it late into the night of December 10th.) The highly charged, erratic [Read more…]

Short Snappy Superficial Astrology for Leo & Virgo Season

There is currently an emphasis on the signs of Leo and Virgo, an emphasis that will be sustained for the rest of the month and all of September. At the time of this post, the Sun, Venus, and Mars are in Leo with Mercury and Jupiter in Virgo. Jupiter will remain in Virgo for the next 12 months. The Sun will enter Virgo on Sunday, August 23. Mercury leaves Virgo and enters Libra on Thursday, August 27. Mars will stay in Leo for a while, entering Virgo on Thursday, September 24. Venus will remain in Leo until Thursday, October 8, with its retrograde period ending Sunday, September 6.

Putting the bigger picture of these influences on hold for a second and looking at it on a small, day to day scale, the Leo/Virgo influence is creating some focus on looking and feeling prettier and healthier. I’m sure many of you have noticed the sudden urge to get organized, clean our acts up, whether in yourself or others. Leo finds it important to keep up appearance and put our best foot forward. Yeah, its somewhat superficial, but our appearance is the first thing people notice about us and is part of how we are remembered. Leo wants us to look like we take pride in ourselves. Virgo wants us to look like we care about the details and don’t look like a sloppy mess. It is the sign most closely associated with health, and during this intertwining of Leo and Virgo vibes we see how improving our health and organizing our personal spaces reflects in our outer appearance, and vice versa.

Looks and health have been popping up in the conversations around me, so I thought I’d make a short snappy little list of random astro factoids on the two subjects, as well as some observations about the natal chart and the appearance. It is hardly a comprehensive list; I’m just jotting down stuff off the top of my head that might be useful or interesting right now so I’m sure I’ll add to it later…

  • The best time to start a diet regimen is when the Moon is in Virgo, especially if it is in the 3rd or 4th quarter Moon phase (the time between the Full Moon and the New Moon.) Virgo prefers to remove things rather than add them to improve health.
  • The best time to begin an exercise regimen is when the Moon is in Aries or Sagittarius
  • The worst times to begin diet and exercise regimens is when the Moon is in Taurus or Cancer. Comforts are highlighted by these Moons.
  • Transiting Jupiter aspecting your natal ascendant/rising, Moon, Venus or natal Jupiter makes you more prone to weight gain.
  • Leo season makes hair shed more than usual.
  •  If you want your hair to grow thicker, longer or faster, cut it during the 1st and 2nd quarters (the time between the New Moon and the Full Moon) and in the signs of Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Libra, and Pisces.
  • If you want your hair to grow slower or thin out a bit, cut it during the 3rd and 4th quarters and in the signs of Aries, Gemini, Virgo, Capricorn, and Aquarius.
  •  Avoid hair chemicals if the Sun, Moon, Mars, or Venus are badly aspected, especially if Saturn is involved.
  • Avoid haircuts, buying clothes, or changing your appearance if Chiron is active in your chart that day. It never goes too well with Chiron.
  • Transiting Venus aspecting your natal ascendant is the best time to change or improve your appearance, especially when Venus crosses over (conjuncts) your ascendant.
  • Very drastic, shocking physical transformations are more often a result of Scorpio or Pluto. This is most noticeable during the year you have Scorpio on the ascendant of the solar return.
  • Virgo, Scorpio and Capricorn are more likely than the other signs to cause health problems when on the ascendant of a solar return. Taurus and Leo on the SR ascendant usually indicates good health, or at least some kind of improvement.
  •  Saturn aspecting the ascendant in the natal chart usually makes a person look older when they are young, and younger than their age as they get older.
  • Neptune aspecting the ascendant is more prone than most for dark under eye circles.
  • Scorpio types often have an Eddie Munster/”widow’s peak” hairline at their forehead. Scorpio and/or Pluto aspecting the ascendant gives the look of shadowy or “hooded” eyes.
  •  When trying to get an accurate health diagnosis, avoid the Moon in the mutable signs of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. Also avoid Moon Void-Of-Course (Moon VOC) in any sign.
  • Avoid surgery or dental work (if possible, of course!) when the Moon is Full or in Aries.
  • Venus aspecting Jupiter is equally as good for finding bargains as it is for going broke on splurges.
  • The best time to look for fashion bargains is when the Moon is in Sagittarius.
  •  Venus aspecting Neptune or a Pisces Moon makes personal photographs turn out softer and prettier.

I’ll keep updating this post (unless I just make another.) Also, you people with personal planets in Leo have funny ways of sneezing. Haven’t figured that one out yet…

Real Time Astrology: April 14 – 30, 2015 / New Moon in Aries April 18

Just as in March, the last half of April will end with a much different feel than the first half. The mood and tempo considerably slows and deepens, with just enough magic sprinkled in to keep it from getting too heavy.

At 5:51 P.M. CST Tuesday, April 14, Mercury left speedy Aries and entered steadied Taurus. Mercury entered a sign ruled by Venus; Venus entered Mercury ruled Gemini Saturday April 11. This mutual reception will last until Thursday, April 30, when Mercury enters Gemini. Until then, this mutual reception creates a beautiful flow between our hearts and minds, our words and actions, our social interactions in our daily lives. This is a great time to make new acquaintances and contacts in your local scene. They may not be life changing acquaintances, but friends made now will go the distance. Mercury in Taurus can make thought processes a little slow and sluggish; Venus in Gemini can be a little too fickle in money and heart matters. This mutual reception, however, brings out the best of both placements and should help smooth out the pitfalls. Both practicality and lighthearted humor are emphasized. Tact and good manners, too! With Mars also in Taurus for the remainder of April, renegotiations concerning money, finances, value, and earning power will continue to be a focus. The mutual reception of Mercury in Taurus and Venus in Gemini can provide the extra diplomacy, negotiation skills, and a little sweetness that is needed to confidently assert our decisions without stepping on toes.

Remember that what Taurus lacks in speed it more than makes up for in stamina,  many of our efforts now will require time and patience to come to fruition. Just keep on keeping on.

Venus and Mercury will also be sprinkling us with some glamour and magic this last half of April. Some notable good times are the weekend of the 18 & 19, with the New Moon in Aries, Mercury in Taurus sextile Neptune in Pisces, and Venus in Gemini square Neptune and trine the Moon’s Nodes along the Aries/Libra axis. Venus square to Neptune is pretty terrible with money, even in spite of the Taurus influence; otherwise this looks like a fun weekend. Venus will sextile Jupiter freshly direct in Leo on Wednesday, April 22 and sextile Uranus in Aries – still hot but cooling off from the final epic square to Pluto – on Sunday, April 26. This may indicate minor lucky financial changes for some; for most this is a particularly nice time to socialize and make beneficial contacts.

The New Moon at 28 degrees Aries takes place at 1:57 P.M. CST on Saturday, April 18. Aries New/Full Moons always make an impact; however, compared to the wild eclipses and Supermoons we’ve experienced so far in 2015, I don’t expect this Aries New Moon to be particularly problematic. Emotions may seem stronger and take on a life of their own, but this need not be a bad thing. It will result from the inevitable wearing of hearts on sleeves. Our feelings and passions are stronger and require urgent expression. Our self awareness will be emphasized during this Aries New Moon, and we will not stand for the things important to us being pushed aside. A fighting spirit will be aroused here as well, though it could just as easily be a triumphant spirit as a testy one.

The house of your natal chart this New Moon falls in is where you will experience typical Aries themes: control, leadership, self interest,  independence, individuality, motivation, and fresh starts.

It is probable that the motivating factor behind the urge to start anew at the New Moon in Aries will be linked to the themes dredged up by Pluto turning retrograde at 15 degrees Capricorn. Pluto is currently stationing retrograde, which officially occurs on Thursday, April 16 at 10:54 P.M. CST. Pluto retrograde serves to clean out our psychic closets, bringing up to the surface those nasty ghosts we prefer not to see. Seeing as Pluto just finished its seventh and final square to Uranus in Aries in March, a series that started in June 2011, it has a few years worth of pathology and power struggles to retrace. The Pluto stationing retrograde may be a source of anxiety, depression, paranoia and other uncomfortable feelings. That which is most necessary is rarely pleasant.

The Sun enters Taurus Monday, April 22 at 4:42 A.M. CST and along with Mercury and Mars in Taurus will continue the push towards valuing our new values that we’ve acquired in the wake of transformative astrological shake ups. Part of valuing our values comes from recognizing how our values may have been abused, used against us, denigrated or otherwise not given their proper dues. Pluto retrograde in Capricorn will be doing some heavy work drawing out from the past bullshit power plays, abuses of authority, and other such traumas that resulted in our personal, professional and spiritual value systems being trampled on.

A Mercury-Mars conjunction in Taurus  will form shortly after the Aries New Moon – reaching exact conjunction Wednesday April 22- and will sextile Pluto freshly retrograde at 15 degrees Capricorn, which will help to put our Plutonic realizations into confident and sound decisions going forward. Considerable stamina and force will be available for the taking. The New Moon in Aries and the mutual reception of Mercury in Taurus and Venus in Gemini can help to navigate the choppier waters of late April. Laughter is, of course, the best medicine; don’t turn down any chance for a good time as it may have deeper implications than you’d imagine.

Real Time Astrology: March 17 – 31, 2015

The end of March will be no less active astrologically than the beginning was, yet the activity swiftly takes on an altogether different flavor. Even amidst the nervous tension and unrest brought about by the final Uranus-Pluto square and the mega New Moon/Supermoon solar eclipse in Pisces (here), the moments and spaces in between begin to cool and crystallize. Chances to restore hope, sanity and equilibrium emerge yet may go unnoticed, drowned out. The chances still exist nonetheless, and it would be a shame for them to pass by unnoticed and unappreciated.

The first tiny wave of relief came late on Thursday the 12th as Mercury left its extended transit of cool, intellectual Aquarius for Pisces. Mercury is considered in detriment in Pisces; however it does bring with it unmatched emotional intelligence as well as greater feeling and sensitivity of thought and communication. A welcome change of pace, despite some of the logistical issues that can sometimes occur with Mercury in Pisces. Getting in touch with and expressing our feelings, dreams, and emotions seems much less of a daunting task. Opportunities for healthy and necessary psychic release present throughout the end of March. Mercury in Pisces will conjunct Neptune in Pisces Wednesday, March 18; sextile Pluto Sunday, March 22; and conjunct Chiron in Pisces on Tuesday, March 24 before Mercury leaves Pisces for Aries late on Monday, March 30.  Recent worries, pains and failures can cause acute sensitivity around these days, but discussing them with anyone around you that you sense might be on the same page can bring healing and closure.

Mercury in Pisces now can be wonderfully stimulating to the imagination, and restore inspiration that may be running dry. These images and feelings can potentially find physical shape once Venus enters the sign of its rulership, Taurus, on Tuesday, March 17 at 5:15 A.M. Venus is just so at home and at its sweetest in the sign of the garden of earthly delights. Venus in Taurus appreciates whatever it has on hand; it always wants more, the best there is, but will enjoy more modest pleasures equally. Art, beauty, glamour, music, dance, cuisine and other physical, sensual joys will be a little easier to come by with this transit. Venus in Taurus makes a yummy, dreamy sextile to Neptune in Pisces Tuesday, March 24; squares dramatic, playful Jupiter retrograde in Leo Friday, March 27; and trines Pluto in Capricorn Monday, March 30. Good times for a good time! These will be accompanied by a sense of lazy self indulgence, but that isn’t always a bad thing. Moments of beauty do not last forever, and with so many other difficult energies at work, it would be a shame to let the pleasures of the season pass you by.

Venus in Taurus is also a good time to look for financial opportunities of all sizes, particularly when in aspect to Jupiter and Pluto. A chance to make improvements to your earnings is also something you do not want to pass you by! Things may feel a little too comfortable with Venus matters at the last half of March, especially with Mercury in Pisces distorting our thought processes, making things seem a little fuzzy, foggy and out of focus. The benefits of Venus in Taurus will end like every transit does, so resist the urge to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Issues surrounding money, compensation, value and security really come to the forefront as we end March. Mars enters Taurus Tuesday, March 31 at 11:26 A.M. CST. While Venus is at home in Taurus, Mars is in detriment here. Rougher, hungrier, frustrated; not as gentle or sweet. The day before Mars enters Taurus, Mercury will enter Aries and we start April off with tension and strains all over again before we even hit the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in Libra on Saturday, April 4th that will strongly reactivate the Uranus-Pluto square…. and, just like that, we’re right back at a fever pitch. Appreciate the beauty and magic unfolding at the last half of March as much as you can.

Quickie observations on the 2014 holiday shopping season/ Black Friday

Mercury is currently in an exact conjunction with Saturn, so making this a quickie post was difficult; what would have started out as simple financial advice would have easily turned into a rant about the excesses that are always encouraged at this time of year, especially during the Pluto in Capricorn years… but, with a Mercury/Saturn conjunction I’ll keep it short and to the point. Because if you haven’t already learned a thing or two about fiscal responsibility from the Saturn in Scorpio transit, I doubt anything I write here will change that.

So, to keep it short and to the point, Black Friday, and most of the rest of the holiday shopping season, could spell major financial troubles for many and I would highly advise against purchasing gifts until the current influences have passed. Mercury will still be in a conjunction with Saturn in Scorpio on Thursday, which is actually the beginning of many retailers Black Friday sales. This will bring a much needed serious focus; it would be wise to try to listen to your voice of reason. Ignore this voice at your own risk! Mercury will be moving into Sagittarius late Thursday, a sign known for expansive optimism about the future, and for excess. Mercury is in its detriment in this sign and may lead a person to take on more debt than they can handle now, confident that it will work itself out later. Mercury will also be squaring dreamy, foggy Neptune in Pisces, exact on Sunday, which will only further complicate making prudent financial decisions. The Sun and Venus, also in Sagittarius, will be squaring Neptune as well, further emphasizing the inability to use restrained judgement. Venus square Neptune, in particular, is reason enough to skip shopping. Venus is the money planet and the square to Neptune is famous for literally making money disappear without knowing exactly how it happened!

Losing money now might not be entirely from overspending (though, the Sagittarius influence will certainly be encouraging it!). I am actually more concerned about theft during this period, specifically identity theft. You know all the hacks retailers have been faced with lately? I guarantee the squares to Neptune will be encouraging the hackers even more this holiday season. It might also make it easier for them to get away with it. It will likely be some time down the road before it is noticed. I strongly encourage paying with cash or some form of secure payment, and leave the debit/credit cards at home. Carrying too much cash may be a risk in itself, though; thievery of all sorts will heightened and that includes personal robbery.

The week leading up to Christmas will be much more Saturnian (read: sober thinking) so my two cents here would be to make this a year of last minute shopping. Or, just boycott the whole damn Pluto in Capricorn commercialized holidays and try to simply celebrate life and people without placing a money value on it. You might be surprised at how this actually enriches the experience. (Truthfully, most of us are too poor to even have this option.)
