Venus-Pluto: Lovely, Dark And Deep

I have a random request: Can you do an article about Venus-Pluto? (Question brought to by my upcoming transit Venus conjunct natal Pluto. But we also have that wild Thanksgiving T-square with Jupiter-Pluto-Uranus which has Venus conjunct Pluto exact. So it could be of general interest too right?) But it seems like it always brings so much angst…and not much else. ~ bomega

This was a question asked by a reader in the comments section just before Mercury retrograde in Virgo, which is why I didn’t respond right away. We do have a Venus-Pluto conjunction coming up in time for Thanksgiving, and it’s Scorpio season, so why not take a look at Plutonic love? [Read more…]

Do You Have “Joyful” Planets In Your Chart?

This has nothing to do with how joyful you are as a person, but brownie points to you if you automatically replied “yes!” before you even read beyond the post title!

“Planetary joy” is something of an older, traditional thing that’s not used as often anymore. It designates each of the seven traditional visible celestial bodies a house that they are/were purported to really express their inherent qualities the best in. A planet in a house it “rejoices” in gives that planet a type of dignity. A lot of people know what essential dignity is: a planet in its domicile, for instance. (Mercury in Gemini -the sign it rules- would have essential dignity.) Planets can also have dignity if they are in a house of their jollies. These things did not come about by guesswork or accidents; there was good reason underlying the matchmaking or it wouldn’t have stuck around for long.

So, what houses do the traditional planets find “joy” in?

Real Time Astrology: October 2016

October is not without its rough patches, of course, but by and large the space weather this month allows everyone to cool their engines and breathe easy. Mercury retrograde is over, eclipse season is over, the Saturn-Neptune square still around but waning. Cardinal T-square ahead for November and December, but not tight enough this month to create major problems yet. Mars is in Capricorn, the sign of its exaltation. Jupiter now getting some mojo back being in Libra.

Real Time Astrology: New Moon in Gemini June 4th-5th, 2016

The frenetic and fun New Moon at 14 degrees Gemini takes place Saturday, June 4th at 10:00 PM CST  (depending on your time zone, it will be in the wee hours of Sunday, June 5th.) The Sun-Moon conjunction will also be in exact conjunction to Venus, also at 14 degrees Gemini, and forming a very tight mutable Grand Cross. The mutable Grand Cross includes the Gemini New Moon-Venus conjunction squaring Jupiter at 14 degrees Virgo and the North Node at 17 Virgo; squaring Neptune at 12 degrees Pisces, and opposing Saturn retrograde at 12 degrees Sagittarius.

As previously mentioned, Gemini (along with the other mutable signs) are bicorporeal or “double-bodied” signs, meaning they relate to concepts of duality and inhabiting different worlds simultaneously. While the cardinal signs initiate change, the mutable signs (which precede the cardinal signs) facilitate changes; the cardinal signs start new seasons (each one occurs at equinox) and the mutable signs prepare us for the changing season. As confusing as a mutable Grand Cross is, it is demanding we adapt to survive and move into the future.  [Read more…]

Real Time Astrology: November 2015

The astrology of the month of November starts with the magic of alchemy and ends with the need for separation of fact from fantasy. This month is a rapidly changing month but the changes are more subtle, more likely to sneak up on us rather than announce themselves.  [Read more…]

Real Time Astrology: New Moon in Taurus May 17, 2015

A mashup of heavy duty discipline and la dolce vita, the New Moon at 26 degrees Taurus takes place late Sunday evening May 17 at 11:13 P.M. CST. (Depending on your time zone, it will occur in the early morning hours of May 18.) The New Moon will sextile Chiron in Pisces and broadly aspect the weakening opposition between Mars in Gemini and Saturn retrograde in Sagittarius. The exalted New Moon in Taurus will also be in a beautiful mutual reception to Venus in Cancer, although they do not aspect each other.

The effect will run deep and be experienced in different ways. For some, it will be a calming of nerves and a pleasurable time. There is emotional stability with this Moon, although the Mars-Saturn opposition will keep the mood serious and sober. This Moon will be lacking the drama of the previous Moon cycles and will create a more natural flow. There are good times to be had here, most likely low key. Taurus is a sensual sign and the mutual reception to Venus in Cancer will reinforce the enjoyment of physical comfort. Music, food, dance, nature, sleep… whatever the good stuff in life is to you, grab on to some of it.

A Moon aspecting Mars and Saturn can be a source of depression for some. The Mars-Saturn opposition will be weakening, so any mental funk shouldn’t stick around for long or be anything you can’t navigate out of. Any bad moods will be a result of frustrations, a feeling of not being able to move forward as planned.

This New Moon in Taurus is a great time to set in motion changes to your physical world that will allow for better long term successes, however you define success. Taurus has considerable stamina and will see projects through to the end, and its aspects to Mars and Saturn will provide drive and discipline. Look at the areas of life that you feel you are “stuck” in and set intentions on moving forward or around these obstacles. Anything from stopping smoking to starting new business plans to moving house or changing something in the home.

Financial security will be a focus here and a change in materialistic attitudes and/or spending and saving practices may be necessary. Your values system may need a makeover, or you may need to stick to your guns in defending your values.

The tempo will be slower, steadier, even leisurely. Physical energy probably won’t be at its peak here; take it easy if you notice yourself feeling more tired than usual. Wearing off physical energy, if done right, can be a mental boost though and help clear the mind. Spending time in nature will do the same. Move your body!

Real Time Astrology: May 2015

The month of May  is an interesting mixed bag of astrological energies at play. Sweet and  tender, busy and strained, focused and then suddenly scattered, alternately austere and romantic. It will be a month that seems to fly, and neither the highs nor the lows will linger for long.

The influence of shape shifting communication planet Mercury and the mutable sign it rules, Mercury, will have the strongest influence, with Mercury entering its own sign on on April 30 and turning retrograde on May 18 (read the in depth report here), the entry of Mars into Gemini on Monday May 11 at 9:40 P.M., and the entry of the Sun into Gemini on Thursday May 21, officially beginning Gemini season. Particularly after Mars enters Gemini, our  needs for communicating, seeking out new information and sources, and our restlessness to move around untethered will dominate.

This will be easier to achieve at certain times in the month than at others. The opposition between Mars at 2 degrees Gemini and Saturn retrograde at 2 Sagittarius (exact on Friday May 15 but will be felt for a few days before and after) will be a lesson in patience and reining in desires. Mars in Gemini can lend itself to nervous tension anyway, and Mars opposing Saturn creates frustrating situations in which we feel our energy, stamina and drive is being dampened or outright blocked. It is typical to experience setbacks and delays with this aspect. Even if you can’t control the outcome, you can control your own response to the situation, so don’t allow the short term stresses to get the best of you and hurt you in the long term. That may be easier said than done. Cold cruelty in some form is one possible manifestation of Mars opposing Saturn (not by any means the only or even typical manifestation), and with Mars in Gemini I’d expect this to take the form of verbal abuse: cutting and snide comments, vicious arguments, freezing people out or even bullying. Anyone can be the perpetrator if they’re in a foul enough mood and are not actively controlling their responses or channeling their nervous energy.

Mars in Gemini has a way of creating travel issues, mostly local trips and mostly timing issues or minor automotive breakdowns. When badly stressed though it can create potential for traffic accidents, so keep road and travel safety in mind throughout the month but more so around the Mars-Saturn opposition and the Mars in Gemini square to Neptune in Pisces May 25.

Towards the end of the month communicating will be considerably lighter, though by then the Mercury retrograde will be well under way and not making things any easier. Still, boosts to thought processes and verbal exchanges can be expected after the Sun enters Gemini May 21 and especially around the Mercury-Mars conjunction at 10 degrees Gemini May 27 and the Sun-Mercury conjunction May 30. The tempo will be sharp and brisk, but not necessarily smooth. The Mercury-Mars conjunction can be another time of arguments, but mostly people will be expressing themselves more forcefully than usual and patience and understanding will go a long way.

It wouldn’t be healthy anyway to keep information inside that needs expressed, and the more you try to constructively express yourself the more you are likely to find camaraderie. Speaking up and speaking out is so much easier with Mercury and Mars in Gemini; with Jupiter in Leo, it will also make you more attractive if you play it right. Seeker and sharer of wisdom planet Jupiter will remain in conjunction to soul mate asteroid Juno in the big hearted, attention loving sign of Leo for the remainder of May.  Being true to yourself, expressing yourself with confidence, will continue to draw people together who have soulful insights to share.

At other times, some of our encounters will be strange and unpleasant. Venus enters Cancer on Thursday May 7 at 5:52 P.M. Cancer is a sign that likes to carry the past into the present with it and is something of a hoarder: of people, memories, emotions, mementos, anything that feels familiar. Venus at 15 degrees Cancer will oppose Pluto retrograde in Capricorn on Thursday, May 21. Around this time people from the past may resurface, especially old flames or estranged family, and for better or worse. Emotional baggage you thought was resolved will no doubt resurface as well. Regardless of whether these rekindled contacts are welcomed, I don’t recommend ignoring them. The influence of Gemini will be trying its best to get necessary info spread around, and this can take any form. This is more likely around May 25 as Venus in Cancer squares Uranus in Aries. A Venus-Uranus square can introduce strange people into your life, or reintroduce people in strange ways. Expect the unexpected here but expect it to be exciting at least!

Otherwise, the transit of Venus in Cancer – from May 7 until June 5- is something to enjoy while it lasts. Venus is the planet of love, beauty, relationships and social graces and hits a sweet note in Cancer. It will be softening the hard edges of hearts and minds even during the more frustrating moments. Lots of enriching experiences are to be had at home or on local turf, especially with family or groups of women. Backyard barbecues and the like. Venus in Cancer is sensitive and requires discriminating taste; opening up to the wrong person can be acutely painful. But opening up to the right people, in the right time and place, will be all kinds of warm fuzzy happiness. Women in particular should notice a stronger sense of well-being from this, especially around the time of the New Moon in Taurus May 17 as this will create a brief mutual reception of feminine energy (more here.)
