Where To Find These Transits & Full / New Moons In Your Own Chart

One of the more frequently asked question on my site is usually from an astrology newbie in response to an article about a transit or a New or Full Moon and finding where in the natal (birth) chart these events “fall”. I usually include in my articles advice about looking to the houses in one’s natal chart where a particular transit or New/Full Moon takes place for information about how the transit or Moon will impact people individually, rather than collectively as a group. A lot of people who are new to astrology have difficulty in finding where transits and Moons fall, so here’s a quick guide to get you started:

  • Go to http://www.astro.com and enter your birth data.  (I like astro.com because the site is easy to use and charts are easy on the eyes.)
  • After you have saved your birth information, click the “Horoscopes” menu at the top of the page. From the drop-down menu, select “Extended Chart Selection”.
  • Once in the “Extended Chart Selection”, change the “reference place” to your current city, or the city you will be in for a particular astrological event.
  • Now, change the start date to the date of the astrological event you are looking for. Let’s say a New or Full Moon or Venus transit that I write about on Viva Combusta! takes place on January 1st, 2020; change the start date to that date I give in the article you’re reading.
  • After entering the correct reference place and start date, look for where it says “Please select the type of chart you want”. From that drop-down menu select “natal chart + transits”. Then click the button to show the chart.
  • On this screen you will see your birth chart as it appeared when you initially entered your birth information, with the symbols for the planets in black on the inside of the circle showing their place in your natal chart. You’ll also now see the planetary symbols in green on the outside of the circle. These are the planets in transit, or moving around your birth chart.
  • The house (the numbered pie slices in the chart) that the green planetary symbols are hovering over on the outer rim of the chart is the house where the transit or New/Full Moon “falls” in, where the transit or New/Full Moon happens for you.

Full and New Moons are one day only events, but other astrological transits such as a Mercury retrograde etc. can take weeks, months, or even years to finish, depending on the planets involved. (The Moon, Sun and Mercury are the swiftest bodies; Neptune, Pluto and Chiron the slowest.) If you’re looking at a transit that takes weeks or months to finish, select the day the transit ends and look at that chart too, as transits often end in a different house than they begin in.

Natal chart (for my website) showing the transits to the chart, as seen by the planetary symbols in green on the outside of the circle. The transit Sun and Moon are conjunct and hovering over the 7th house, therefore the Gemini New Moon that fell on this day would fall in the chart's 7th house.

  1. my natal sun is at 29 degrees Sagittarius in my 11 house, could you please tell me what it means for me this coming full moon ? I am really triggered as its falling right over my Sun’s degree .
    Thank you !

    • Pretty strong bursts of energy or inspiration with Full or New Moons conjunct natal Sun, inner life and outer life seem to be in synch. Less compartmentalizing. The 11th house is friends and social acquaintances as well as individual future goals, so with the Full Moon in Sagittarius conjunct natal Sun in Sagittarius in 11th it looks like a time to expand your horizons in ways that will either bring in more or better quality friends, or in ways that will push your goals forward.
